Land girl

Land girl sweater, started 28 Nov 2004
Pattern: Short sleeve lace sweater, Vintage Knits, Sarah Dallas

The colour is glorious. It is the colour of August. Knitting this is like knitting a field of corn, which is immensely cheering in February when it's sleeting outside.

A small ambition

One day I hope to design something that other people will want to knit.

My oldest UFO

Thanks to Karlie, Jackie, Nona, Vicki, Violet for your kind comments on the Great sweater. I knit it on a circular as far as the armpits to fool myself into feeling like I was making quicker progress, and it worked. As nona pointed out, it was extremely quick to knit up (in fact I forget the actual date I finished. I was in too much of a hurry to wear it, and failed to photograph it and blog it at the time).

And with that seamless segue, let me introduce you to Hilde, my oldest work in progress:

Hilde jacket, started 1998
editor's note: Have just checked Rowan magazine this pattern came from. It is Rowan No 10. 1991? If so, this UFO may be 7 years older than previous estimates. Poss. try carbon dating

No wonder it's taken me so long, all that duplicate stitch. Why I didnt just knit the pattern I can't remember, it was too long ago. I love the fairisle chequered pattern, and I remember it being fun to knit. Maybe I'll have an extra push to finish this, it's a cute style. I'll come back tomorrow and show a pic of how it's meant to look.

I'm happy to say that, like the best fashion decisions, this little sweater still hasn't gone out of style, despite its years languishing at the very bottom of my list of priorities. Of course, there's still plenty of scope for that to happen - the shows not over til the sweater's on the lady.

Here's how much more I have still to do.
Duplicate stitch pattern in I think 2 colours around top of one sleeve. Max 2 hours.
Sew up
Pick up and knit front edges and collar
Block

So what's your oldest?

I did not swatch

Wild duck socks, started 23 Feb 05
Pattern: Knitty Crusoe Socks

I did not swatch. I couldn't wait any longer to use the fabulous Koigu that Jackie sent me. I cast off and knit merrily away on Knitty's Crusoe socks, admired the beautiful definition the yarn had, admired it's glorious squeezability, marvelled at the beautiful colours. It looked a little skinnier that other socks I have knit. 'But', I thought, 'the stitch seems quite stretchy I'm sure it will be fine.'

I had a client meeting, and I knit all the way there on the train, and all the way back. By the time I got home, I was ready to shape the toe. I decided to try it on. I had to rip back the entire thing.

I'm old enough to know better.

A great sweater

Great sweater, started 8 Jan 05 finished 20 Jan 05
Pattern: Stitch n Bitch Big Sack sweater

sacksweater.jpg

This has turned out to be a fantastic sweater. I wear it all the time, and I'd wear it more if I could. It's warm and cozy but not too 'hot' (it's knit in Rowanspun Chunky in Blue Haze), and it's pleasingly both rugged and elegant. When I was knitting it up the fabric felt quite rigid and bulky, but with blocking in the wondrous lavender wool bath, it is now soft and drapey. It's enough to make me look forward to the cold snap that the weather people are predicting for the coming week.

Whisper tie

Whisper tie, started 9 Jan 05
Pattern: Interweave Knits' Fairisle Tie, Winter 04

fairisletie1.jpg

I love the pattern on this tie, it's so simple but delicate too. I knit about a foot of it in a 4ply wool, but it was going to be much too bulky and made an enormous knot. This mercerised cotton is better, making a more drapey fabric.

Goodness neckties are long though. But luckily not very wide.

Knock me down with a feather

As we say here in England, whenever the chance arises.

I've been blown away by Jackie's kindness. Look what came in the post today...

koigu1.jpg

This is just beautiful. It is like jewellery to me! The colours are just wonderful, and even more amazingly, they exactly match my living room. It's going to take me a while to decide what these beauties will become. But that's ok: it means they can stay on my coffee table a while longer, and I can squoosh them regularly.

The yarn and stitch markers (which incidentally look fabulous against my couch fabric) and disco-stitch holder are truly inspiring, but more so was Jackie's gesture. She just totally reached out to me and I was really touched. It made me be sure to go out of my way to do something really nice for someone else, reach outside my comfort zone of family and friends.

Thanks Jackie, you really made my day.

And because it's beautiful, and it knows it, here's another pic

SockapalOOZa

sockapal2

They're finished! And I think they're as sweet as can be! I so hope my sock pal loves them too. They're superwash merino 4ply. The colours are quite accurate, a really singing green and the purple trim and pompom remind me of spring. I saw the same colour combination in the front garden in some early spring flowers.

How about that grafting? Very neat.
