An empty bed
I felt so sorry for poor Junior. When Mr Raitte and I use our computers simultaneously, there is nowhere for him to snooze where he can be close to us. Everywhere in the room is hard surfaces. And we've got these peculiar orthopedic chairs, which make even laps unavailable. So poor Jnr has no option but to cling desperately to Mr Raitte or myself, and well, sometimes you're trying to WORK, or BLOG, matters of extreme importance, and it's not easy to do so with a small black cat clinging to your front and trying to lick your face.
So I thought I'd quickly knit up a Wendy's Kitty Pi bed for him out of leftover Rowanspun Chunky I had from knitting this great sweater. Of course he is Only A Cat (as I frequently remind him) but this would solve problems for the entire household. After three goes through the washing machine and blocking on a rather stylish 60s white storage unit, it was ready.

You will notice, it is vacant. Jnr has been pointedly ignoring it. I set it on the couch next to me, where he often sits. Jnr made do with sleeping on two square inches of spare space, rather than let one fibre of that kitty bed touch him. When I try to place him on it, he acts like I'm trying to lower him into cold water. Just see if I knit him anything ever again.

What can you do? That's just cats all over.

Maybe if you were to pretend it was something tremendously exciting that he wasn't allowed near, then he would be interested.

What about putting a favourite toy in there or rubbing it with catnip or something. You could always try putting it in his favourite place so that he has to sit in it or on it to get to it...(gosh what a grotty sentence, but you know what I mean!)

When i made the kitty pi bed we lured our cat in by hiding lots of his favourite treats around the inside under the rim. By the time he'd finished finding them all he was happily settled!

If he's anything like my cats, he'll need to think you don't want him in the kitty pi. Mine are perfectly happy to lie on the sweater I'm about to wear, but ignore the cushion I put out for them.

Oh no! I guess you really have to "let go" when knitting for animals and kids, huh?

CATS! I specially made an exciting boucle mouse for my best friend's cat, and stuffed it dull of catnip, and tied it to a ribbon (her favorite thing) and...nothing. Sigh. It's a lovely bed though and I would sleep in it if I could.

I don't know where I've been, but I've miss three new posts from you, so I'm commenting on one of them, but I've just read all three. I LOVE the cat bed and I giggled when you said it's like 'lowering him into cold water' when you place him on it. Very witty indeed. Hmmmm a knit dress...good for you. I look forward to checking in on the progress. I really love Rowan Cotton Tape, but perhaps it's a bit heavy. The Sgt Pepper sweater is coming along nicely too! Take care.

hee hee! I can just picture him trying desperately to avoid being lowered onto the "specially made for him" kitty bed. Cats will do just about anything to avoid touching something they've decided not to like. I was walking through the mall the other day and saw the cutest little book. It was titled: "There's No Such Thing as an Ordinary Cat" - were truer words ever spoken??
