sockapal2za

I'm very excited to be joined up for Alison's Sockapal2za... and this time as a fully-fledged sockknitter.

So once again I'm in a sock dilemma - as last time, I've been drawn with a sock pal who lives in a warm climate, but I'm itching to try fairisle socks. Not a match made in heaven. I think where she lives they do still get a winter of sorts, and maybe I can win her over with their beauty... let me share my plan:

I've long admired Knitty's Tangled Garden socks (not strictly fairisle but stranded, two colour), and while I was browsing Get Knitted for possible yarns (in fact I was looking for a cotton blend, but apparently they are only available in this country as self-striping yarns), I wondered what they might look like in these two colours:

and Neon

I'm fascinated to see how a two colour pattern will come out in two variegateds instead of solids.

Honestly... should I go for something a little more sober and/or practical? My alternative is to try and get hold of some cotton blend sock yarn (I have some Jawol cotton (which I also used for my Go With the Flow socks, but in white - perfectly practical for oneself, but utilitarian as a gift, wouldn't you say?), in some kind of lace pattern instead.

I do love those tangled gardens socks, although I am far too chicken to try them. You my dear are both brave and talented--you will make them work.

But your sock pal would also have to be thrilled to receive anything resembling your glorious tangerine go-with-with the flows. That's the beauty of the pattern: even the utilitarian yarn shines.

That is not much help to you, is it. Well, as a warm-climate dweller, I would vote for the latter as a matter of practicality. But are hand-knitted socks really about practicality in the end?

both color schemes are beautiful! hmm... just try and knit up a swatch and see how you like them! i'm sure whichever way you decide, it'll be fabulous!

As someone who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, I can give you some insight about what your sock pal might like. Personally, if I were to receive a pair of fairisle socks I would jump for joy and wear them every day anyway even though they were warm. Furthermore, people in Phoenix wear sweaters when the weather gets below 70 degrees. That being said, any knitter in a warm climate would love fairisle socks for the so-called winters they have. Those yarns are delicious. I wish I was your pal!

If you are really itching to try those Tangled Garden socks - I'd be happy to offer my feet as victims! ;-)

I'd knit with the lorna's laces. If they come from a seriously hot area, as long as it's not the UK, they will have ac. I haven't even thought about my pal's socks yet!

I'm totally stressing about my sock pal choice, but I LOVE both of yours...I think using two variegated yarns sounds like a very fun idea...have you ever seen the scarf in Last Minute Knitted Gifts knit with two differe noro yarns...I love it. I also don't think the LL's is too hot. I'm also trying to hunt for a summerish yarn. Take care.

I think using a variegated yarn for two-color knitting is a great idea. However, I would use a solid for the main color and the variegated for the second color. Two variegated together will obscure all your hard work.

Lisa at Blogdogblog experimented using Lorna's in fair isle patterns. Here's one that didn't work and why. http://www.exit109.com/~lsyoung/blog/archives/week_2004_08_22.html#000342

LA is quite warm (not yet though- so far this year we seem to be cool, with lots of earthquakes) and I still make myself thick wooly socks. I paddle around the house in them and feel cozy. I am a FREAK for working with 2 variagated yarns in fair-aisle (or 1 variagated and 1 solid) and will probably be doing that for my sock pal. Yes, again.

Either of your choices will make beautiful socks... which ones would *you* rather knit?

My first instinct would be to use one variegated and one solid, but why not do a swatch and see how it looks with both. As for the climate, I wouldn't worry too much; when I lived in New Zealand I used to find it cold at temperatures that would be seen a summer weather in the UK!

The tangled garden looks like a knitting adventure- I'm really keen to try something lacy for my sock pal.

Both of them are very pretty. If I got a gift of white socks in a pattern...I would LOVE it. I think that would be gorgeous!

I think the Lorna's Lace yarn, even knit fair-isle, is fine for warmer climates -- the yarn is so light, airy, and breathable! Using two variegated yarns for the fair-isle design is an interesting idea. As long as there is enough contrast between the yarns -- in both color and value -- you should be fine. When in doubt, play around with some swatching.

Hi Anna! Thanks for visiting my blog and for the lovely compliment :)
As a warm weather dweller, my humble opinion is as GREAT as your 2 color sock plan sounds, I think they would be best left for someone in cooler climes! Yes, we do have a *winter* here in warm climes (Florida for me) but it is very short and as beautiful as I'm sure your socks will be, I would hate to think they would get worn only one week a year!
Think lace and save the warm woolies for yourself!

PS - Neon is my FAV LL color, in fact I used the shepherd sport for a shawl and get so many compliments every time I wear it! Pic is on my blog if you want to see :)

Oooo! That'll be neat if it works! :) I'm still waiting for my sock pal's sock yarn to arrive.

I love those colors - I think it would have a neat effect and hey if they seem a bit wild when you're through, you can always add them to the 'Amelia Raitte' collection and whip out a pair of white ones for the sockapal2za....

With all due respect to the other Jessica who commented above, I think your 2 variegateds are much more different than those in the example she linked to. I think it could be fantastic. I'd go with the advice to swatch, though. OOh, you could do one with the pink/yellow as background and blue/green flowers, and one the other way round, that'd be really wild (& use even amounts of yarn!)
OK, I'll shut up now! Bye!
