Ugh

This bag was meant to be these colours.

Not like this. This is nothing like Rita Marley and Dior 04.

Gentle reader, if you know the secret of felting Cascade 200 without the colours bleeding, please, share your wisdom.

Kiri has me held to ransom; very little other knitting has been going. I now have 350 stitches on the needle; only half a repeat and the edging to go before I am liberated. My next challenge will be to find a place to block it - the living room rug would be a good if Jnr didn't have a fascination with pins (and putting them in his mouth). All the lace around is calling me, especially this Kimono shawl, and Blackberry Ridge's Hiawatha stole is playing a major part in my knit fantasies.

For the failed FO I also have a success to show, finished last weekend:

Grumperina's Tivoli, started 18 June finished 26 June

No need for an edging, once it was pressed the neck edge and cast off edges lay flat. I really enjoyed this, such a clever construction and flattering style. To be honest this is just the tiniest bit big on me, but I'll wear it nevertheless because it's such a pretty, classic style. And it will be perfect as a twinset with Sgt Pepper.

Finally, I've been playing with stitch patterns for lacy socks, but I think my sockapal2za pal might prefer a blue and white baby cashmerino pair of these stripy anklets. She doesn't seem like a lacy 'type'. Or am I just saying that because I really want the white lacies for myself?

Hell, I'd love those lace socks for myself. :) Love the lace pattern. Can't wait to see what you decide for your sockapal2za.

You could try rinsing in white vinegar first or using one of those sheets in the washer that is supposed to "trap" colors and prevent bleeding.

while i don't know of any special way to make the yarn not bleed into the other colors once its knit, i do know that soaking yarn in a vinegar bath will set the dye. most likely the dye won't even bleed into the water -- it actually traps it in the yarn!

just to be doubly safe, after you've done the vinegar bath and the yarn is dry you could try soaking it again (and this time maybe with some detergent to remove any residual vinegar smell). your water should stay clear.

hope this helps. what a disappointment it must have been to pull that bag out of the washer!

I don't have any helpful hints on the cascade issue, sorry...but I LOVE the Tivoli and those red and white striped socks/footlets on your link are too much fun!!!

Posted by: michele at July 3, 2005 06:37 PM

I'll try to check the knitting forum to see anyone there has any hints on bleeding.
Your Tivoli is very very beautiful. It seems black is the most elegant and flattering colour for this pattern so far. You should send Kathy a note and enter her gallery.
The lace pattern you're experimenting is tempting ... I understand the desire of wanting one for yourself! ;)

Oh my, that did bleed, didn't it? Well, since felting needs the pH change anyway, I think I would try using a fairly strong vinegar/water mix for felting, and throwing in one of those dye absorbing cloths just in case. Good luck! (And "gift" the bag to someone who didn't know what the colours were supposed to be... or who likes the colour combination anyway. With another felting and blocking, it'll look fine. ;) )

make your pal the stripey socks, keep the lacy anklets for yourself. tivoli looks absolutely fantastic - but then again i expected nothing less. burn insence to the great knitting gods in the hope that they will forgive you for your sins and not ruin any more of your projects - felted, non-colourfast or otherwise.

The Tivoli looks gorgeous! Love the black color! I would have loved to make a black one for myself, but it's hard to see the shaping in a dark yarn... unfortunately. Do you mind if I include this picture and a link to this entry in the Tivoli gallery?

Your black Tivoli is such a classic. Sorry to see what happenned to your bag after felting. I've heard of adding vinegar to the wash to stop colours bleeding.

The Tivoli looks wonderful! Sorry I don't have any tips about the color bleeding, though....

Posted by: Deb at July 4, 2005 03:54 AM

oh dear, it really did bled a lot huh? I was told a vinegar soak helps a lot.
Love ur tivoli..:) It's in my to do list. Your Kiri is growing fast. Mine was a real slow knit. I'm still knitting it. LOL

Love your Tivoli, looks so classic and chic. Wow, I never knew that felting could makes yellow turns pink ;).
Knit that Hiawatha stole, it's such a beauty!

Posted by: yuvi at July 4, 2005 08:35 AM

That's a pain isn't it? That red must be awfully strong, I'm surprised it didn't make the yellow more orangey rather than pink. Still, I'm sure you'll find a use for it and it's fun experimenting. Tivoli looks good and it was a nice quick knit too.

oh oops for the bag - i have no suggestions, unfortunately. the tivoli is great! i am feeling tempted ...

i would go for stripy anklets - they are gorgeous.

ReTayne. from label: "Stop the Bleed! Color fixative for commercially dyed cotton fabrics" -- you might call the manufacturer and see if it works on wool -- I've used it on my felting with Cascade to excellent effect. (But then maybe I used colors that didn't bleed?) You add a tiny bit of this liquid to a very hot rinse cycle, perfect for felting. Craft Industries Ltd., Somerset, MA. Quilting stores and dye companies carry it.

Also, Shout and Woolite both make products that look like fabric softener sheets, only you add them to the wash water. One is called Color Catchers, and they're both found in the grocery store laundry aisle. I routinely add them to my laundry when there are red shirts or new jeans in the mix. They work great for me, but I haven't tried them with felting (always use ReTayne).

Oh dear, I'm late to the party, but I second (third? fourth?) the vinegar rinse--although I have to say I've never seen cascade bleed like that, so I wouldn't have thought to do it myself. I will from now on. Your Tivoli is lovely and doesn't look a bit too big.

Posted by: Ashley at July 4, 2005 03:31 PM

I know it's not the lively-up-yourself look you were aiming for, but I actually like the new colors of the bag. They have a sort of yummy 1950's cookbook cake and candy photo quality about them.

Posted by: Petula at July 4, 2005 06:22 PM

Tivoli is very nice - elegant, classic look. I love it - it really doesn't look handknit at all either which is usually a good thing. With this type of style - definitely a good thing. That cascade ran like crazy...I actually don't mind the new colors though. Certainly not the statment that you started with but really not a complete tragedy. I would just say "yeah, I meant for it to do that" and carry on using it. :-)

Posted by: Vicki at July 4, 2005 08:46 PM

why not before knitting just rinse the yarn in cold cold water (w/o agitation) until the water runs clear, the same way you would do for fabric that wasn't colorfast. then let it dry, knit and then felt as normal.

Posted by: carolyn at July 4, 2005 09:37 PM

the bled colors still look nice together. You knitting is always sooo beautiful!

Posted by: uglyagnes at July 5, 2005 12:01 AM

Your Tivoli is very elegant, I like it in black also the Kimono shawl. I like lace in less 'traditional' colours

Posted by: Anita at July 5, 2005 09:32 AM

Your Tivoli looks great! Very flattering. What a shame that your colours ran but the bag still looks good.

Posted by: Ali at July 5, 2005 01:41 PM

Your Tivoli looks great! I love it in black. Sorry about your bag....that sucks. But it still looks cute!

Posted by: Tara at July 5, 2005 01:51 PM

That kimono shawl would be gorgeous. If you must lace, it must be elegant like that!

Posted by: Sarah at July 5, 2005 07:44 PM

Tivoli looks fabulous!! Definitely a classic! So sorry about your bag. It is very nice though.

Posted by: Eilene at July 7, 2005 11:52 AM
