A note on Bridie

If you are thinking of making Bridie, it may be worth your time to experiment with different methods of increasing for the right front shaping. I went for the good old standby of M1 by picking up the 'bar' between stitches and making a stitch from that, but when you work that kind of increase on every row, the strain on the surrounding stitches starts to show, pulling the work in.

In the event it blocked out perfectly well, but if I was to make it again, I'd experiment with other methods, perhaps working into the front and back of the very first stitch of the row, or my other new favourite, working into the stitch below the next stitch, then working the next stitch on the needle.

edit to add: Jody rightly points out that a cable cast on will work well in this instance. Instead of increasing one stitch every row, you could instead use a cable cast on to add two stitches at the beginning of each right side row.

Hey Anna -- I thought I'd share my favorite method for getting extra stitches at the beginning of a row in a situation like yours (when you need to do it over several rows close together). I like the cable cast on. I'm sure you know it but just in case your readers don't there's a decent illustration at the bottom of this page http://www.wonderful-things.com/newknit1.htm.

Hope this helps!

Good news, thanks Anna! It's always lovely when a designer helps you out with their patterns. I have yet to try Bridie (I think I'd better get on with Jemima and Claude before I purchase any more of your lovely patterns!) but it's always so reassuring to know you're on board to help.

Hi Anna
At the moment I am knitting Claude which is looking gorgeous.I am knitting it in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in duck egg blue. The tension is the same as the Cotton Angora.
I intend to knit Bridie soon and have the pattern but wondered if you can suggest an alternative yarn to the one you used as I can't find any of that.I can't seem to find a yarn with the same tension.
Thanks for your help and keep up the wonderful work with your designs.
Janet

I love Bridie - it's so elegant. I'd knit into the front and the back of the first and last stitch. You wouldn't have all that strain on the other stitches. I am fond of m1 though.

My favorite is also knitting into the stitch below; I find knitting into the front and back of a stitch yields a purly-looking bar that I'm not crazy about.

Congrats on Sgt Pepper getting picked up by Alchemy Yarns. I just saw the ad in the new Vogue Knitting yesterday (let me know if you want me to send over a pdf copy of the ad for you). At first I thought that they had copied your amazing design as it looks a lot different to me in their yarn versus the original Cashay. Just FYI my mate just returned to London and is posting your magazine from there as I just can't deal with the post offices over here.

Bravo young lady!!!!

Hi

I have a quick question about Jemima and can't find an email for you. Can you email me?

Thanks so much

I have been knitting a long time and have never seen the following recommendation, but I have found it is simple and works pretty well:

In the row below the necessary increase, insert a yarn over. On the increase round, knit that yarn over so that it is twisted. I like to twist is so the left-leading leg is in back for the right-side decrease and in the front for the left-side decrease.

The yarn-over releases the stress on the stitch to the side of the normal make 1 increase be giving you a little extra yarn. I have compared this to doing a tight backward loop and have found the yarn over gives a much neater appearance.

this is totally off subject, and if i missed the post about this, let me know...i got the new vogue knitting (i think that is what i saw it in) and there was an ad for alchemy yarns that had sgt pepper in it. i really think it was. did you sell the pattern to them?

ok, i am sure you read vogue knitting anyway, but i wanted to make sure you knew about it...

Will you post how one can buy the Tiggy pattern?

Also, which of your patterns that are currently for sale do you think is best for a barely post beginner knitter?
