Crest of the wave

Dundonnell stole, started 27 Feb 06 finished 10 Apr 06
Pattern: Eunny's Print O' the Wave
Yarn: Hipknits cashmere sock yarn, 3 skeins

She’s huge! Using sock-weight yarn and 4mm needles has given me a stole over seven feet long, but light, soft, airy and comforting. More of a blanket than a stole in truth, but an instant favourite. This stole will keep me warm - in memory of Uncle John.

It was a nail-biting finish. Working the wave pattern along the final edge, I was already contemplating contingency plans as I knit faster and faster in that well-known knitters' tactic of trying to beat the yarn before it ran out. But run out it did. Delving into my textile recycling bag my luck was in and a swatch I had worked was retrievable, and just enough to finish. Here's what was left over, with a ring for scale - no more than three metres: the knitting sprites are forgiving, and smiled on me that day.

i'm always trying to stretch that yarn. sometimes i'll go back, take out a couple rows if it's in st st, or i'll use one size smaller needles. i'm really bad when i buy yarn with no project in mind. i always buy one skein usually, sometimes a second, and end up wanting a sweater! never works. they end up being shoulder warmers.

It's beautiful ... and what an exciting finish! One more reason it's important to swatch.

Posted by: Ruth at April 12, 2006 01:02 PM

Lovely. Is this a pattern of your design? I'm a novice knitter so this would likely be more difficult that I could attempt right now, but I'd like to put it on my "some day" list.

Posted by: Megan at April 12, 2006 01:13 PM

The shawl looks beautiful - you really chose the perfect yarn for it!

Posted by: AmyP at April 12, 2006 01:16 PM

Just ignore me...I see you used eunny's pattern. Must read for comprehension.

Posted by: megan at April 12, 2006 01:17 PM

simply beautiful!

Posted by: julia at April 12, 2006 01:23 PM

That is totally beautiful, I love it.

Posted by: kerrie at April 12, 2006 01:28 PM

stunning! so gorgeous! i'm a bit disappointed that knit-faster-than-the-yarn trick work out, though - i thought it was foolproof.

Posted by: kris at April 12, 2006 01:58 PM

It is lovely! And made even more so by the action packed finish. Thank the knitting faeries for swatches!

Posted by: amanda at April 12, 2006 02:30 PM

Just lovely! Though I can live without the nail biting finishes. They just stress me out from the moment I know they are possible.

Posted by: Leah at April 12, 2006 02:52 PM

It's more than beautiful. The edging really makes a fabulous finish. After making several stoles (and two are adaptations of print o the wave) I have to say they are so much fun to wear. Very nice knitting, Amelia!

Posted by: margene at April 12, 2006 02:57 PM

i can only imagine the softness and loft.... perfect materials for such a large stole. and what luck you have finding your old swatch! i love when that happens.

beautiful work. thank you for sharing.

This a beautiful stole !

Posted by: francoise at April 12, 2006 03:19 PM

Wow - that is truly gorgeous!

Posted by: Jen at April 12, 2006 03:29 PM

Ooh, it's pretty. And in cashmere? I can't even imagine . . . (grin).

Posted by: --Deb at April 12, 2006 03:50 PM

Woo hoo ... very lovely! I have plan for this pattern too ... but I am going to use Zephyr and most probably not making one in a size like Eunny's.

Posted by: Agnes at April 12, 2006 03:52 PM

Absolutely stunning, and I can use my imagination for how incredibly soft it must feel.

Posted by: Lauren at April 12, 2006 03:57 PM

Another gorgeous FO! I love the color (pardon my Yankee spelling); you can wear that stole with almost anything.

Does it still smell like woodsmoke after the blocking? Probably not, but you can always go back there and stand by the fireplace. ;-)

Posted by: Beth S. at April 12, 2006 03:58 PM

Wow, that is a beautiful stole. And in cashmere! How warm and fabulous. You are a beautiful knitter.

Posted by: Sarah at April 12, 2006 04:02 PM

it's quite beautiful! i didn't realize how wide it was until i saw the mannequin shot. i'm so glad you were able to salvage that one with the yarn in the swatch!

Posted by: jody at April 12, 2006 04:13 PM

Indeed, you have been smiled upon by the knitting sprites. I think it's because you were so diligent about ripping and re-working Sgt. Pepper until it was "just so". This is your reward for hard work. Savour it.

Posted by: Gina at April 12, 2006 04:18 PM

It is simply gorgeous - beautiful knitting. How lucky you were to have just enough yarn, it was obviously meant to be!

Posted by: Anita at April 12, 2006 04:33 PM

Simply gorgeous. Your stole inspired me to order some gray cashmere laceweight for the lace scarf in the latest IK. I can't wait to knit it up.

Posted by: Stephanie at April 12, 2006 04:37 PM

wow, the stole is a beauty. very very pretty indeed.

Posted by: anne at April 12, 2006 04:43 PM

It's gorgeous! Nice color & great pattern.

Posted by: Ann at April 12, 2006 05:26 PM

It looks great. It was obviously meant to be if you were able to find just enough yarn to finish it. A beautiful colour - just right for a forest party.

Posted by: Mary at April 12, 2006 06:05 PM

So lovely, Anna! You will look luminous in it. And I like the large size. Is light enough to bundle around your neck like a scarf as well? Nice to see you posting again :)

Posted by: Robin at April 12, 2006 06:05 PM

Gorgeous! I just printed that pattern last night! Nice to see someone else knit it.

Gorgeous, Miss Anna--the knitting sprites have clearly gotten over their fit of pique. Now for the real question--can the stole pass through the ring?

Posted by: Ashley at April 12, 2006 07:18 PM

Oh wow! That is just the most beautiful thing. Well done!

Posted by: Noo at April 12, 2006 07:25 PM

Absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to see what you take up next.

Posted by: Stephanie at April 12, 2006 07:27 PM

What luck! The knitting sprites must be sorry for being so cruel to you earlier. The stole is lovely.

Posted by: Angela at April 12, 2006 08:39 PM

Wow! She is amazingly beautiful. Good for you!

Wear it in excellent health! ;0)

Posted by: Christina at April 13, 2006 12:26 AM

Oh, Anna, how BEEEEYOUTEEFUL! Really amazing. I just printed that pattern out myself last week, wishing that a finished shawl would just magically show up draped over my chair. That ain't happening, apparently, but seeing yours is the next best thing.

Gray! I love gray anything! Congratulations.

Posted by: Ann at April 13, 2006 05:48 AM

anna, dear, it's 2006, or did you knit that beauty last year ;-) You really do lovely work.

Posted by: jacqueline at April 13, 2006 06:30 AM

Beautiful! I'm so tremendously impressed by your speed and skills. It's like a wisp of a cloud, to be nestled about your shoulders. I'm working on one too, but I'm not nearly as quick...

Posted by: HB at April 13, 2006 06:43 AM

Hi from Austria! This shawl really turned out so gorgeous, the yarn you chose is just perfect for it - a true piece of art indeed!

Posted by: KarenK at April 13, 2006 11:46 AM

Oh Anna, this elegant shawl is so beautifully done and in the most sophisticated colour. And whew, it was nail-biting till the end, huh?
