Needle & Hook - luxury knitwear

label

My latest harebrained scheme is to bring the joy of handknits to non-knitters. At Needle & Hook, my designs can be ordered and delivered as finished garments a few weeks later. A niche in the market... but is there a market in the niche? No doubt I'll find out soon enough. The prices are realistic: making your own cardigan is surely not cheaper than buying one mass- or machine-produced, but compare it to a store-bought hand knit and you've stitched a dyed-in-the-wool bargain.

The plan is a cunning one because, unusually for a new business venture, it involves almost no financial risk: practically no outlay until the first order comes in. There are of course, though, other risks. Most specifically to my confidence. But lets cross that bridge if we come to it. For now, please be my guests and peruse. Tell me what you think. (And if you find any bugs, other than the caterpillar.)

Wow Anna! I think it's a lovely idea! People are willing to spend so much on a machine knit acrylic sweater from a store like Anthropologie it seems that you would have a market indeed.

I hope it does well for you!

How exciting, Anna! I hope it exceeds every expectation you have for it. (I've gone and emailed Daily Candy London about it, by the way :))

Great idea, and I love how you have the little swatches showing the different colour combos they can choose from. Are you going to do all the knitting yourself? or do you have some little elves to help?

wow! how cool! love the idea and the site design. good luck!

Posted by: kris at April 16, 2006 10:28 AM

What a brilliant idea! Congratulations on your new business. The site looks great, but I have one little suggestion. Make the swatch thumbnails clickable so they pop up with larger version of the image. I think people would like to see the detail.

Posted by: Amy at April 16, 2006 01:30 PM

Anna - what a great venture!! I am in love with the design of your store site. Are you really going to handknit the orders? You are so brave! :)

Posted by: Jackie at April 16, 2006 01:43 PM

I love it, the website itself looks exactly as I thought it would. Perfect. I wish you lots of luck and success. xx

Posted by: kerrie at April 16, 2006 02:06 PM

The site looks classic and just lovely.

Best wishes for success!

Posted by: Leah at April 16, 2006 02:59 PM

Wow, what a chic website! I'm sure you'll do really well; I'll certainly mention you to all my non-knitting friends (especially when they start dropping dark hints about me knitting something for them...) The best of luck to you!

Posted by: Dee at April 16, 2006 03:38 PM

what a great idea and a lovely website (but it wasn't as if i expected anything else!) good luck...i just know that if you are involved it is going to be a success.

Posted by: jacqueline at April 16, 2006 03:44 PM

It's lovely, Anna! Best of luck with it. do you want to know about typos? I think dilapidated is spelled with an 'i'. and were you going to post prices or does that follow after an inquiry?

Can't wait to hear how it goes for you.

Posted by: caroline at April 16, 2006 04:45 PM

I love that green and pink swatch for Jemima. It's exactly the colour combination I've had in mind for my Jemima for MONTHS now - and ordered the yarn last week! I'll let you know how I get on. Good luck with this venture Anna; I admire your courage and wish you all the best.

Posted by: Philippa at April 16, 2006 05:15 PM

Wonderful idea. You have done a beautiful job of the design, so very well thought through. I had a online-store, these things take time. I wish you the best!

the bug i've run into is that i can't join the mailing list! when i try i get an error email bounced back saying the 'mailinglist' mailbox does not exist.

Posted by: katie e. at April 16, 2006 07:05 PM

Congratulations! I love the layout of the new website. I love your idea but would love to see accesories like shawls, scarves, socks, etc added to your collection.

On another note, I'm knitting my first pair of socks using your Giotto pattern. So its my first time knitting socks, using the magic loop method, knitting picot edging. I bought your sock pattern set and would love to knit the other socks but do not know how to do a turkish cast on. If possible, can you include a tutorial on your site?

Thanks,
Liz

I love the concept, wish you all the best, I know you'll exceed everyone's expectation ;)
Anyway, Happy Easter!

Anna! How lovely, good luck with the new business and i am excited to see it grow with every beautiful design you make. I hope to perhaps join you tomorrow night at Knitting Hill! Congratulations on your wonderful endeavors!

Posted by: margaux at April 16, 2006 08:02 PM

I just stopped by to look around, fell in love with your designs, and then was so psyched to see you working up one of my scarves!

Your stuff is absolutely stunning - lovely!

Cool!!! Congratulations!

Posted by: nikki at April 16, 2006 09:31 PM

FABULOUS! Yeah for you. I can't wait to hear about all your successes as I am CERTAIN that they will come!

Posted by: knittingnurse at April 17, 2006 12:45 AM

The Needle & Hook site looks great, Anna! Good luck on your new venture. I am sure your style and talent will ensure you much success!

Posted by: Robin at April 17, 2006 04:04 AM

Congratulations! It is strange -- when I have free time at work, I've used it to read your archives. I recall an entry about starting a business in which you quoted along the lines of: the first step is to take the first step. Something of that nature. I really admire your ability to pull it all together and to pull it off. Cheers to your new business!

Posted by: Gina at April 17, 2006 06:23 AM

Best wishes and every success! The site looks great. Very professional.

I think it's a great idea. Good luck to you!!

Posted by: Wanda at April 17, 2006 02:39 PM

It looks fantastic! You've had the confidence to do, and so much more stylishly, what I thought I'd like to do. ~x~

Posted by: Jane in Camden at April 17, 2006 03:03 PM

Lovely clear site. Agree with Amy, though - if I were considering buying I'd want not just bigger pics when click on the thumbnail, but different views of the knits.

Posted by: Emily at April 17, 2006 03:08 PM

Beautiful site, and how exciting! I'm sure you'll have great success.

Posted by: Carrie at April 17, 2006 04:39 PM

Oh, this is fabulous!! What a good idea. The site is gorgeous and your designs are always so fashionable. Do you think you'll do smaller items, like a sock or a scarf, for those that might want to get something, but can't afford a sweater?

Posted by: Purly Whites at April 17, 2006 05:57 PM

First of all, congratulations from a devoted fan of your work!
Beautiful website to complement your fab designs as well.

One bug found: sizes on Jemima (To fit bust 32 (34: 46: 48: 40: 42)
looks like it should read: 32(34: 36: 38: 40: 42)

Everything else looks great…Cheers!

Posted by: maria at April 17, 2006 06:47 PM

the new website looks great. you have a small typo in the jess details sections--'it's fit' should read 'its fit.'

Posted by: alexis at April 17, 2006 09:22 PM

I wish you luck with this. I know how hard it is to start a new business.

Posted by: Nik at April 17, 2006 10:33 PM

Wow! I'm so impressed! That's so awesome. I hope you have nothing but success.

And while we're on the topic of your lovely designs, I finished the Nautilus socks! I made them for my sock pal, and while they are too small for me, I seriously love them. Thanks for such a great pattern! I only hope my pal thinks the same. :)

Posted by: lelah at April 18, 2006 04:13 AM

LOL, I only meant "too small" because if they did fit me... I wouldn't give them up!! My pal has a shorter foot than I. :)

Posted by: lelah at April 18, 2006 04:15 AM

The website looks great. Best of luck with the new venture.

Posted by: Mary at April 18, 2006 10:53 AM

Not having read all the previous 54 commnets, I will add my humble voice to the crowd... And I am sure the the majority (like me) think that it is a wonderful idea. I think you might even find some beginning knitters interested, because they are not (yet) able to handle complex projects. The trick will be getting the word out to the right audience, of course! You may find that your local yarn store will be happy to advertise your services in their shop or newsletter, since you purchase your yarn and notions there...

Posted by: Bernadette at April 18, 2006 12:09 PM

Wow, great idea! If I was a quicker knitter, then I would probably consider doing something like that. Alas I am a middle-distance knitter, plodding along too slow for a sprint and not enough stamina for a marathon. Oh well!

The design of the site looks fantastic, but then again I am a sucker for the clean, simple and sophisticated.

Posted by: rachel at April 18, 2006 03:37 PM

Great idea Anna! Good luck with it - I think the garments are very reasonably priced, especially when you consider the price paid for kits to knit items yourself. Let us know how it goes...

Posted by: Vicki at April 18, 2006 05:54 PM

The website looks great! Good luck in your business venture.

Posted by: Mandy at April 18, 2006 10:53 PM

I love your new website! The collection is wonderful. Will you be adding other items to it? As I'm a knitter I probably won't order any, but it's a brilliant idea for people who don't knit, or just don't have enough time to make such polished knitwear as yours.
If I'm getting the pounds to dollars right, I think you're seriously under-charging for your work.

Posted by: Christina at April 19, 2006 12:23 AM

The designs are gorgeous, and the website is beautiful. Your pictures are so romantic, and the enlargements give the perfect amount of detail. So happy for you! Good luck with your new enterprise!

Posted by: hege at April 19, 2006 12:41 AM

Yay yay double yay for you! Way to go!

Posted by: Leisl at April 19, 2006 03:03 AM

The site looks great! How awesome for you. :D I hope you get your first order soon. Way to go, Anna!

Posted by: Avivah at April 19, 2006 07:22 AM

Congratulations! Your site looks absolutely beautiful, I wish you the best of luck. I recently started a business myself and it's a scary, scary, enormously exciting thing. You will always be proud of having done it, no matter what happens. Now go forth and conquer. (...don't forget the marketing. Find the market in that niche!)

Posted by: Robynn at April 19, 2006 12:43 PM

I'm starting to save up now for one.

Posted by: Tracy Austin at April 21, 2006 10:52 AM

Hi- first time I've left a comment here, but I've been a lurking fan for a while. Just want to say your Needle and Hook site looks fabulous, but I've got one small comment about the picture used for 'Sally'- as soon as it caught my eye I couldn't get the thought out of my head- the angle of the photo makes the model (you?) look like your arms have been chopped off at the elbow and that you are very short bodied. This doesn't therefore do justice to the garment, which I'm sure is gorgeous. I think, because of the proportions of the knit, it needs a photo that shows it in relation to the body of the person wearing it.

Just my thoughts though- only mentioned it because it was the one slightly 'ouch' note in what is a fabulous site (with great garments) and it really jump(er)ed out at me....

Posted by: Skitten at April 21, 2006 05:48 PM

What a brilliant idea and fabulous website! Congratulations, I hope this is going to be good business for you. The presentation of the garments is so sophisticated with the little swatches. Cute! Not to speak of the very reasonable prices. I hope you have some little elfes to help you knitting, otherwise I can see the problem that you might get bored with speedknitting your own creations. But anyway, all the best for your enterprise!
