Caution: zebra crossing

Stripes socks
Pattern: Jaywalker from Magknits
Yarn: Opal sock yarn in Zebra

zebra socks

These racing stripes are for my sister. My third pair of Jaywalkers: I've no doubt there will be more in future: probably as soon as I get my hands on some more tabby shades of handpainted.

Think of these poor feet tomorrow: they'll be carrying me 16 miles as I join my colleagues on a sponsored walk in memory of Mim. Mim was only 32 when she died in the London bombings on July 7 last year, on the Tavistock Square bus. I did 12 miles a couple of weeks ago, but there was yarn involved - tomorrow may be more of a challenge, but you can be sure there will be some handknit socks waiting for me at the finish line. Please add your encouraging comments below; you know how much they help.

The jaywalkers are truly adorable.

I hope the walk goes well. The blog in memory of your friend is really moving.

Good luck with the walk, and we'll all be thinking of your friend.

Love the jaywalkers! Hope the walk goes well!

your socks, as always, are too cute!

good luck with the walk, you'll do great!!

I imagine each step you take you will be thinking of Mim. What a lovely way to spend the day. The 16 miles will pass by quickly.

Oh my God! Those socks are so awesome. You've got to do them in the Opal tiger stripe. I just pulled out some Opal tiger stripe for my next pair of socks and realized I don't have 2.5 needles, so off to the LYS. They better have them...

Posted by: Leslie at June 22, 2006 02:14 PM

16 miles--you are a chaamp! Bailey says she wishes she could come keep you company as you are clearly much less lazy than her owner :)

Posted by: Ashley at June 22, 2006 02:15 PM

Love those socks! It looks like you have narrow ankles too--did you change the pattern any? When I made them they were too loose around the ankle--maybe next time I'll use 0's...Love those shoes, too! Good luck on your walk!

Posted by: victoria at June 22, 2006 02:21 PM

ah, the zebra socks! they are fantastic! (what kind of floor are you on, btw - i love it!)

good luck on your walk tomorrow! you will do just great! i hope you plan to wear some other shoes, though ;-)

Posted by: kris at June 22, 2006 02:35 PM

Oh! Great-looking socks, and fabulous shoes!

Good luck!

Posted by: eunny at June 22, 2006 02:46 PM

Good luck with your walk! Love the socks. I knit some zebras too and now I wish I'd done them as Jaywalkers.

Posted by: Anna F. at June 22, 2006 02:49 PM

good luck on your walk, the socks will be a lovely treat for the feet when you are done.

Posted by: heather at June 22, 2006 02:52 PM

Grumperina has a reader's gallery of everyone who's done her patterns http://grumperina.com/knitblog/
I think she's still giving prizes for significant numbers of additions. The gallery is fun to look at too. So many jaywalkers in so many colors. You should check it out - after your walk of course. Good luck.

Good luck on the walk. It sounds like a good way of honouring her memory.

Posted by: Mary at June 22, 2006 03:21 PM

I've made a small donation. I'm sorry you lost someone you knew on that scary day.

Posted by: Noo at June 22, 2006 03:32 PM

First - good words about the Jaywalkers! I love the bengal tiger/zebra thing. Super cool.

What a good thing that you are walking for Mim. I'm hoping you'll only feel one mile of every two or three, and that the weather will be beautiful. :)

Posted by: Jen at June 22, 2006 04:36 PM

I hope you are o.k on your walk, it's a very impressive distance, for a very touching cause, I'm very impressed at how you're honouring her, and good luck.
I do like the socks, they're very funky. I haven't knitted socks before so maybe these are the one's to start with. Your photographs make your blog stand apart from other blogs, it's always beautifully done. Yours and Eunny's blog are the only one's I go back to all the time.
Good luck again and all the best on your walk.

Best wishes on your walk. What a special way to commemorate your friend.

Posted by: Debby at June 22, 2006 06:02 PM

What a nice way to turn a senseless tragedy into something hopeful. 16 miles with friends for a common cause will just fly by. Any soreness at the end will be temporary. The memories of the day and the good of the money raised will last longer.

Go Anna, Go!

Posted by: B. at June 22, 2006 06:07 PM

The cause will carry you through - you can do it! I like the zebras as well.

Posted by: Julia at June 22, 2006 06:12 PM

I love the way the stitch pattern shows off the striping; I bought some of that Opal tiger and I wanted to use the Jaywalker pattern, so I'm thinking they'll be a perfect match. Good luck on your walk.

The shoes are so lovely! I feel silly leaving a comment about shoes as you are set to embark on a walk in memory of a life cut short. I wish you the best on your walk. Foot soak and handknit socks at the end, to be sure.

Posted by: Gina at June 22, 2006 06:35 PM

Good luck on your walk Anna! What a lovely thing to do to honour your friend's life. You can do anything you put your mind to; the walk will be fine.

Posted by: shelley at June 22, 2006 07:54 PM

Anna, the jaywalkers are terrific... but those shoes! Love them. You always have the best shoes.

As for the walk: you're doing a wonderful thing. The camaraderie on the walk will carry you through. You can do it!

Posted by: Mary-Heather at June 22, 2006 09:26 PM

Go for it, Anna!
Do you mena that you will be knitting while you walk? :)

Posted by: erin at June 23, 2006 12:31 AM

I think those are my favorite-ever Jaywalkers. I've yet to make a pair. Maybe mine will have to be like yours. And those red shoes! So cute.

I hope your walk goes well, and hope for no blisters!

Posted by: Norma at June 23, 2006 01:41 AM

All the best for the walk!

Posted by: Siow Chin at June 23, 2006 03:54 AM

Best of luck with the walk, and I hope there's not too many blisters at the end!

You can do it, Anna! Good luck!

Posted by: yuvee at June 23, 2006 10:50 AM

Super good wishes for a strong walk and less than sore feet at the finish line!

Love the Jaywalkers. You have inspired me to give the pattern another try!

Posted by: Leah at June 23, 2006 01:53 PM

I love your new Jaywalkers - they look great in zebra stripes, and I like how you've paired them with the pink shoes. Best of luck with your walk!

Good luck with the walk. A.x

Posted by: Amelia at June 23, 2006 04:15 PM

Rrrawr! Love the socks... Good luck on the walk - I'm sure it will be a tough day in more ways than one. Time certainly flies...that is for certain.

Go Anna, go!

Posted by: B. at June 23, 2006 08:24 PM

The best of luck and wishing you wonderful weather for your walk. What a lovely way to remember your friend.

Posted by: dreamcatcher at June 24, 2006 12:29 PM

Good luck on your walk, I hope it's a beautiful day! I love your zebra socks, I'm going to have to knit a pair for my youngest, she's crazy about zebras.

Posted by: Liz at June 24, 2006 02:16 PM

This is a lovely thing to do in honor of Mim. Her website got me teary, how very sad to loose someone like her.
Side note- bring extra socks to wear for the walk. I worked the avon breast cancer walk and noticed that participants feet would sweat and wet socks caused blisters.

Posted by: Anonymous at June 24, 2006 04:01 PM

oh! very, very nice!

Posted by: señoralinda at June 28, 2006 05:08 PM

The socks are beautiful. And what you're doing to remember your dear friend is, as well.
