Flummery socks

I think slightly variegated solids are my very favourite sock yarns. Along with tabby stripes and zebra stripes. This pair of socks, which remind me of rhubarb fool, or raspberries with meringues and cream, all those soft pink summer puddings which attract the bees, are in Fleece Artist sock in Rose, and the pink is paler and more subtle than it is showing here. They're very short because I was overly-cautious in my yarn rationing. I needn't have, there's masses left: I could add at least a couple of inches to the length, but I'll probably leave them as candy-floss ankle-highs.

Just plain old top-downers, with a little knot pattern, which gives them a spotted look when the light catches. They are so simple, so plain and I love them for it. Do you ever feel like your socks are too pretty to wear?

Those socks are just the right amount of pretty- delicate but not fussy, and a lovely color pink. Beautiful summer socks!

Cute! I love them.

They really are lovely!

They are pretty!

Lovely ! And the colour is beautiful, very delicate.
I often feel like my socks are too pretty to be worn, even if they're not (my first socks are hideous !). So when I decide to wear them at last, it makes the day a little bit special…

They are beautiful. Will you post the knot pattern?

Posted by: Julia at August 16, 2006 11:30 PM

Those are so lovely!! I hope you plan to share the pattern soon. I just finished up some Giotto's and I have Nautilus next on my list. I just love your sock patterns!!

Posted by: Leah at August 16, 2006 11:40 PM

so soft and feminine. what a beautiful combo of yarn and pattern.

Posted by: amy at August 16, 2006 11:58 PM

Beautiful! Count me among those who would knit these, were a pattern available.

And yes, I do have socks I consider too pretty to wear. I try to give them away as gifts so that they'll get some use!

Posted by: Ann at August 17, 2006 12:53 AM

Love the socks!! I agree delicate and something I would definitely wear. Oh and I finally finished my NBaT... i tried to widen the collar but didn't quite pan out, but i did use the bias edging instead of picking up stitches! Thanks for your guidence!! Check out the hem too!

They're lovely! I would so wear them :-) Makes me want to cast on for socks! I finally finished my NBaT! I didn't make the collar as loopy but i used your bias edging and love it. Thanks for your guidence!

those are very pretty. and yes, i think all of my socks are too pretty to wear. i've made several, and i've yet to wear them.

Posted by: maryse at August 17, 2006 01:52 AM

I feel like that all the time. Congrats to you! Do you have enough yarn to make wristlets?

Posted by: knittingnurse at August 17, 2006 02:28 AM

The socks are beautiful - a lovely interplay of design and color. I give away most of my socks so I guess no, I really don't wear them =)

Posted by: keri at August 17, 2006 02:51 AM

SO darling and they look good enough to eat!

Hi, Anna. I think the socks are pretty and a nice length. I am also glad to see you back. Um, I have a question for you regarding your hat pattern Witterings. I have started it and really find the pattern to be well-written, but I have a question about the brim. I'm making the hat for my MIL who loves hats, but I've come to find she prefers the hats that the brim rolls up like this http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/page/H/PROD/womens-hats/cr43
I'm a pretty novice knitter and don't really have a sense of what would need to happen to make the brim flip up like that, and if I could do that with the Rowan yarn. Do you think you could help me?

Posted by: Robyn at August 17, 2006 04:36 AM

My nana used to make flummery, and the image is so clear and such a perfect way to describe the socks. And the pattern? Elegantly simple. Brava!

Posted by: Sonya at August 17, 2006 04:42 AM

Oh they are lovely, such a pretty pattern and a yarn that is new to me, thanks for the introduction.

Posted by: Rebecca at August 17, 2006 12:02 PM

they are so cute and simple- I love them.
You should check out Sundara Yarns semi solid sock yarn- I'm sure you'd love them. Slightly variegated in gorgeous colours.

Those socks are just so cute! I could see them working really well as little girl socks (as well as big girl socks!)

Posted by: AmyP at August 17, 2006 02:18 PM

Those socks are precious. I think the shorter length makes them look "dainty".

Posted by: Leslie at August 17, 2006 02:25 PM

Love the socks and the color!

Posted by: Liz at August 17, 2006 04:04 PM

well done! very delicate!

Posted by: Janice at August 17, 2006 04:05 PM

they are REALLY cute!

Posted by: shobhana at August 17, 2006 04:19 PM

Wow! Those are so pretty that they make me want to wear socks.

Posted by: Gina at August 17, 2006 04:28 PM

They are cute! You have inspired me to make socks again after a long time away from them!

Posted by: Lin at August 17, 2006 04:52 PM

Oooo Anna, these are fabulous! So simple but SO much more personality than stocking stitch. Yay!

Posted by: nikki the blogless at August 17, 2006 06:33 PM

Slightly variegated solids are my favorites too, and those are darling. The pattern and the length go perfectly together.

Posted by: Jen at August 17, 2006 06:35 PM

Beautiful socks! I love the Fleece Artist sock yarn. The knot pattern looks great. Can you post the directions for it?

Posted by: Brenda at August 17, 2006 08:03 PM

Hi Anna! I am in a plain sock frenzy, and yours are just lurvly. I'm with you on the slightly variegated solids. How much noise does a sock need to make? Not much. Not much noise, really.

Posted by: Ann at August 18, 2006 01:11 AM

Pretty in pink!

Posted by: Ramona at August 18, 2006 01:42 AM

Those socks are so pretty and girly! I love the texture and color together.

Posted by: Debby at August 18, 2006 02:05 AM

Lovely. Although I can't decide if I like the socks or the thought of eating rhubarb fool better. You people over there do the best desserts :)

Posted by: Ashley at August 18, 2006 03:55 AM

I really love these socks - fantastic color and such a lovely pattern! Great job!

Posted by: Dipsy D. at August 18, 2006 05:52 AM

Beautiful, as always.

Posted by: Rachel at August 18, 2006 07:05 AM

Beautiful socks. I have your leaf sock pattern sitting on my table along with some Lemongrass handpainted yarn. It will be my first toeup sock.

Posted by: Patricia at August 18, 2006 12:28 PM

I love that color! And the socks are so...dainty! I want to marry them. Wonderful!!

Posted by: elizabeth at August 18, 2006 06:59 PM

The reason why I'd never wear a pair of handknitted sox is precisely because I'd think they were too precious to be on my feet!

Yours look beautiful :)

Posted by: Annarella at August 18, 2006 07:59 PM

Gorgeous, yes! But never too gorgeous to wear! To much work goes into them for that!

I love Fleece Artist sock yarn. Lovely colors and generous yardage!

Posted by: Leah at August 19, 2006 02:42 AM

I think they are too pretty to exist!

Posted by: knitannie at August 19, 2006 09:13 AM

Scrumptuous socks, yarn, pattern - I second the plea for knotmaking directions as a) I know a sweet little 4 year old princess who would look darling in a smaller version of these socks and b) I'm still hoping to be able to wear "normal" socks again one day. For now, it's medical (=compression) stockings all day every day exclusively (siiigh)...
Take care!

those *are* a delight.
