The apiarist
Apologies for the technical problems we have been experiencing. We now return you to your regularly scheduled viewing.
Oh what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy, grown-up busy busy bee;
Whiling away the passing hours,
Pinching all the pollen from the cauliflowers.
I’d like to be a busy busy bee,
Being just as busy as a bee can be.
Flying ‘round the garden, brightest ever seen,
Taking back the honey to the dear old queen.
Bzz, bzz, bzz, bzz, honey bee, honey bee,
Bzz if you like but don’t sting me!
Kenneth Blain
And the song continues endlessly in that manner.
This is Rowan 4-ply soft in black, Scottish Tweed in a yellow held together with a strand of Kidsilk Haze also in a golden colour. I was swatching to find the most pleasing relative depth of stripes, but I rather like the undulating effect of the differing depths together. As a wasp-waisted sweater to wear with a pencil skirt, it might give the brazen panache of those creatures who carry danger-markings. On some unconscious level we must respond to these signals from nature, wherever they appear, and on days when one feels vulnerable, uncarapaced, the armour of stinging insect stripes might offer some protection. An unspoken warning.

So glad you're back!

Perhaps a similar dynamic explains the recurring popularity of leopard spots and tiger stripes--but bee black & gold is much more original. (Welcome back.)

I'm really glad you're back too. I'm a big fan of your chic, Bloomsbury-flavored designs--you're the next Kim Hargreaves. I have a question, though, about whether or not you could make your patterns geared more towards ease of completion and finishing. Is there any way you can design your sweaters to be knitted in the round--like your lovely tunic in Magknits modeled by your sister--so there're less pieces to sew together? Also, is there any way to do the same for Claude--and to not have to knit the neckline in 3 separate pices and then sew them on? It seems there's a much wider margin for error and frustration when there's more sewing and piece-work involved, and it'd be lovely if your patterns were as easy to make as they are lovely to imagine oneself wearing.

Very glad that you are back! I have to say, I love stripes and have many stripey things to prove it. I really like the visual effect of the varying depths of the stripes in your swatch - definitely worth further exploration!!

Anna, such a treat to see your update on bloglines! Welcome back!!! And with lovely knitting pictures to boot. I imagine that sample feels as pretty as it looks. Very excited to see the design as it unfolds and when it is finished.

Lovely to see you back and to see your latest inspired knitting. Looks wonderful, lovely stitch pattern, looking forward to seeing the finished result.
I am keen to start knitting something to wear with a pencil skirt myself. I am dying to embrace the whole pencil skirt/platform pump thing this autumn.

I'm so happy you are posting again! I like your new design so far - especially the texture the pattern is producing.

This is a delightful combination, and I can sense the similarity to Kim Hargreaves, too... also glad to see a post from you!

Welcome back!!
It's so nice to have a designer of your caliber to inspire and challenge us. With so many easier patterns around, I really appreciate having more difficult designs to keep knitters on their toes, and expanding their skills. You're not just an excellent designer, you teach very well, too.

A'hoy and welcome back sailor, you have been missed. I am very interested to see what comes of this black and yellow - dangerous and gorgeous all rolled into one...

That looks yummy! And needless to say, how lovely to see you back.

Hee! I haven't thought about that song for over a decade, and now it's stuck in my head. Which is only a good thing.
I love the idea of insect armour! I've always been entranced by red-and-black and yellow-and-black insects, and was really upset when I first learned it means they're poisonous, although now I think it's pretty cool. A wasp-patterned wasp-waisted sweater sounds brilliant.
Anna it's so lovely to see you back, and hope that this signifies that things are looking up where you are.

I too am glad you're back. It is a treat to read your blog and watch how you develop your ideas.

Glad to see you back. I do like your interpretation of black / gold - so much softer and more sophisticated than the jarring shiney black and bright yellow I might have envisioned for a bee. I love to have my eyes challenged!

I love bees!! Please post the pattern if you can!!! I hope you are feeling better as well.

Nice swatch!

That's a gorgeous combination! Are you thinking "tailored jacket", perhaps? It's exciting to think about the possibilities of a gorgeous little swatch like that.

Anna, good to hear from you finally. I love this idea of a gloriously patterned garment that's spiritually protective.
Have you seen Aganetha Dyck's collaborative work with bees? Here: http://members.shaw.ca/ahtenaga/

hey! you're back! it was great to meet you again last week; next time we'll talk more i hope.
i'm in a hate-hate relationship with wasps at the moment (ouch) so i'm glad you're focusing on bees, not wasps.

In the late 70's,I had a black and yellow striped Mohair sweater which made me feel bold and brave. I'm eager to see your more elegant version.
