Another autumn

It seems impossible that another year has passed, but Thursday found me once again exhausted, overheated, sore-footed, laden with yarn and staggering away from Alexandra Palace lighter in pocket.

yarn

Koigu for another pair of tabby socks. A skein of Shaefer Anne in reds from tomato to crimson, from Hipknits - I am so looking forward to seeing my copy of Yarn Forward magazine (have you seen it yet?). A solitary ball of Sublime silk/cashmere aran - I am still nursing an idea for a knitted dress, and thought this might be a fibre contender, but alas there aren't the really rich, saturated tones I'm looking for.

The buttons are for a new cardigan. Red (again), a raglan based on Jemima with detail added: fully-fashioned shaping, knit-in pockets, darling buttons.

The largest purchase, the one trying to escape from its bag when I bumped into Amelia (which is always a lovely surprise), was 10 balls of Rowan Biggy Print. A Bad Buying Decision. The right colour, a good price, but what was I thinking? Totally inappropriate for the project in mind, I think I had yarn blindness. So they are for the 'ebay, one day' pile.

Another, constrasting, Good Buying Decision, was made at the weekend. New shoes, modelled here with new socks. When I saw Yai Ann's 'Child's First Socks' in pale blue, I had to follow suit.

Ohhh, you remind me of these beautiful black patent pumps I found on the weekend, with white borders, gosh they were beautiful. Unfortunately I need winter boots... not pretty heels. Boo.

Those buttons are super cute! Nice socks too.

Posted by: bernie at October 17, 2006 01:31 AM

Those socks look great. And a cardigan based on Jemima? I don't think it gets any better than that.

Posted by: rose at October 17, 2006 02:37 AM

I had a pair of shoes just like that in the 1960's and they hurt my feet sooooo badly that they ended up getting burned in the burn pile since I was in so much pain.

Posted by: Nancy J at October 17, 2006 02:37 AM

Sooo... confess - where did you find the shoes? they are SO. CUTE.

Posted by: carrie at October 17, 2006 02:46 AM

You look so cute in those socks and shoes!

Posted by: erin at October 17, 2006 03:02 AM

Ok, as much as I love the knitting, I *really* love those shoes! What are they, and do you suppose they are available in the US?

Posted by: cookie at October 17, 2006 06:12 AM

Your socks turned out beautifully and are tres chic with your shiny new pumps. As for the Rowan Big Wool, I just cannot see you knitting with bulky yarn :-)

Posted by: nona at October 17, 2006 06:12 AM

Anna, those are beautiful socks. I'm loving the shoes, too.

Posted by: nikki at October 17, 2006 06:28 AM

Tres Chic! Your taste is impeccable (and inspirational). x

Posted by: Robin at October 17, 2006 10:14 AM

I just got the vintage socks book and was eyeing those socks. I adore the feminine shell pattern - and they look rad with those shoes.

Posted by: Nan at October 17, 2006 01:02 PM

Schaefer Anne is one of my absolute favorite sock yarns. The added mohair gives it extra softness. Enjoy your purchases!

Posted by: Rossana at October 17, 2006 02:32 PM

I just won a skein of Schaefer Anne in a blog contest and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival via post. The Child's First Socks look absolutely fabulous in a solid color. Thanks for the inspiration!

Posted by: amanda at October 17, 2006 02:33 PM

Love the socks & the shoes! I'm just amazed at how well they go together.

Posted by: Michelle at October 17, 2006 02:42 PM

I don't normally like socks with dress shoes, but Ohmygosh those socks and the pumps are soooo freaking cute! I want those shoes... can you share where on earth you found them?!

Ooo. Lovely shoes and lovely socks. I'm working on some Badcaul and Nautilus at the moment. I hope you don't run out of sock patterns for me to knit!

Posted by: Noo at October 17, 2006 04:11 PM

I'm about to block a lacy scarf made from Schaffer's Anne. The colors are amazing, so I can imagine how much you love your tomato-to-crimson hank. Aren't we smart shoppers?

Posted by: rachel at October 17, 2006 05:41 PM

How do you manage to make wearing socks with heels and a skirt look so darned wonderful?

Posted by: Gina at October 17, 2006 05:55 PM

I'm not the 18th commenter (lucky you, whoever you are); I just want to say hello, you're back! And off running with a new bunch of yarn and possibly some great patterns in the future. Hold on to the Biggy Print; who knows, you may come up with the most elegant coat sometime in the future...

Posted by: MJ at October 17, 2006 07:13 PM

There's a jacket in the new Rowan magazine (issue 40) which uses biggy print. If you dont want the yarn I'll take it off your hands!! (also, like everyone else, love the shoes)

Posted by: clare at October 17, 2006 07:32 PM

Love the color of Anne and am going to try it for my next pair of socks.

Nifty shoes and socks, my friend!

Posted by: Leisl at October 17, 2006 09:43 PM

I spent a fortune at the knitting show. Wasn't it great? I love the buttons you bought, I bought some buttons too from Nichols' buttons. Did you see their stand? If not this is their website - it is irresistible. http://www.nicholsbuttons.co.uk/

Posted by: Kendra at October 17, 2006 10:06 PM

I haven't counted comments, because I don't care if I win - I'm just here to say that it is so great to see you, Anna. I hope all is well!

Posted by: stinkerbell at October 18, 2006 07:28 AM

Posted by: yvette at October 18, 2006 11:14 AM

cute socks, cuter shoes. Will you be wearing them together? Do you have a skirt to go with them?

As previous posters have said "I. Want. Those. Shoes."

Posted by: BryAnn at October 18, 2006 02:47 PM

Lovely stash, gorgeous socks - and I adore the shoes. Wish I had your sense of style..or already shed the excess weight that's still left (see my blog's archives for details) to reveal the "Inner Audrey".
Take care, will you?

Posted by: Viv at October 18, 2006 04:23 PM

Lovely socks--as always! :-)

Posted by: Beth S. at October 18, 2006 05:02 PM

Uau! I love your site, and i adoore your knitting!
Probably for you this is another comment (sorry for my english) giving compliments for your work, but i really mean it! This is how i would like my site to look: and your knitting, what i like more about them is that they are really shaped, the sizes are perfect, they are wearable... they are THE alternative of the sweaters that you simply buy for little money and always fit. I think that your knitting shows that hand knitting is worth it, and everyone can weare'it and dont have to look like wearing a "bag".
Congratulations!

I'm going to have to go to Ally Pally next year, as this time round I was on holiday in the U.S. Purl Soho in Manhattan is the most gorgeous shop, sensory overload, heaven maybe. The knitting shops in the U.S. were great, and because of the exchange rate, all the yarn seemed very reasonably priced, and most of them had a wonderful selection. I had to pay a fine for excess luggage, but it was worth it.........!

Posted by: Vanessa at October 18, 2006 05:57 PM

Lovely socks and the pattent leather shoes with vertical strap! wowzers!

Posted by: Miss Twiss at October 18, 2006 07:53 PM

Posted by: Iris at October 19, 2006 04:33 PM

What lovely socks - I think I have to make myself a pair.

As for Biggy Print, what is a good project for this yarn? I have seen it on sale everywhere, and I hold off buying every time because the perfect project has not come to mind...

Posted by: Heather at October 19, 2006 04:41 PM

Love the shoes! I wish I could pull off the "socks in High heels" look, but with size 11US feet, it could be scary. I hope we get the new mag over here soon.

Posted by: Julia at October 19, 2006 07:20 PM

Love the pretty blue socks! I can't wait to see your new designs too. Hope that you are able to show us a peek soon.

I saw on a previous post that you are into cycling. I'm just getting started, but unfortunately we're headed into the colder months. Fingers crossed for a new bike by springtime. :)

Posted by: Debby at October 20, 2006 04:09 AM

Hello - The Yarn Forward magazine looks promising - would love to see a copy or subscrbe. I went to the website but could not see subscription instructions. I am also in USA. Is the Mag in needlework stores? Perhaps my Aunt could pick me up a copy and send it. Any suggestions?

Posted by: Sheila at October 20, 2006 12:16 PM

I'm all inspired by the Schaefer Anne. Tomatoey socks. Yum. ~x~

Posted by: Gryphon at October 20, 2006 08:27 PM

Anna, I have a question about the Badcaul socks. I may be totally dumb, but, uh, could you explain what C3 front means? and C3back? I mean, I know it means cable three front, but then what do you do?

Posted by: Krista at October 20, 2006 08:41 PM

I love the heels, and the contrast of black patent with pale blue is gorgeous.

Posted by: Kitty Jimjams at October 22, 2006 10:34 AM
