Blustery

Some knits jump off the needles so quickly, uneventful or unremarkable, they race from skein to wardrobe without ever being scrutinised here. Like all those pairs of socks for Mr Raitte, darned, redarned, worn out and replaced, the humblest knitting. Another one of those was this little vest. The plainest, quickest knit, started on a whim and finished in a week back last October, there was nothing to say about it. Wouldn't you know, it turned out to be one of my favourites? It has one little pocket, and all the ribbing is cast on or off tubular-wise.

blustery vest

Here's a secret: many of the pieces I design, I hardly ever wear. My day-to-day style is somewhat, let us say, understated. So when one works its way into my wardrobe like Pippa, or Jemima (now well and truly exhausted, worn out, and needing replacing), or now this, it's unexpected and comforting.

There is something quintessentially British about that pic... love the vest. Hope you are doing well, Anna. :)

It looks blustery. The vest seems like a warm and comfortable piece. What yarn did you use, if you recall?

Posted by: Ruth at February 26, 2007 01:50 AM

What a lovely piece and an even lovelier photo. Glad to see that you are enjoying your "plainest, quickest knit".

I hope this finds you well. Thinking of you as always.

You're right...all that careful choosing of yarn and pattern, but the best pieces are the simple ones we can wear over and over. There's a celtic vest I'm looking to knit soon. Think it will get lot's of wear. Your's looks to be cashmere...is it?

Your pieces are all so simple and elegant. I can't believe you knitted that in a week!

Posted by: Elaine at February 26, 2007 02:52 AM

I love that photograph-- it's very Vogue-- I can imagine Stella Tennant modeling in it. Although I doubt she'd do as well as you!
I agree with you on that the simplest are best sometimes.

it looks cold in that wind! you should put on a coat!

the vest is lovely and looks super comfy. i love your skirt, too.

Posted by: kris at February 26, 2007 07:07 AM

Your vest looks lovely, I can see why it's became a firm favourite and what a great photo!

Posted by: Tracy at February 26, 2007 10:49 AM

It's lovely, Anna. I want a simple vest to wear as our weather has been unusually temperate this winter. It fits you well. Beauty.

Posted by: AmyH at February 26, 2007 12:33 PM

What a great photo! Sometimes the simplest knits are the best. You should write up the pattern - I know everyone would love to knit it. xox, J

Posted by: Julia at February 26, 2007 02:41 PM

That's very nice - and I believe also very "now", as if that mattered. However I also rather covet your skirt... it wouldn't be from the new Toast catalogue would it? If not I saw one very similar in there that I am saving up for, if only because it has POCKETS!

Pippa in particular is one of your patterns that I most admire. I will know I can call myself a knitter when I dare order the pattern.

Posted by: Kitty Jimjams at February 26, 2007 05:31 PM

what great styling for a simple knit. i'm all for understated elegance. you have the look of audrey hepburn!

Posted by: blossom at February 26, 2007 08:18 PM

Love it! And the setting of the photo shoot... how perfectly British.

Posted by: D R E W at February 26, 2007 08:23 PM

Lovely!

Absolutely fab. I love the simple elegance of it. It's just tidy, you know? So neat and tidy.

I love your patterns. And am girding my loins to order flicca too.

On www.craftster.org they are doing a knitalong of your patterns in the 'knitalong' section. Have a check here http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=136864.0

Oh please please please sell this pattern. I will buy it as soon as you do!

Posted by: Stacia at February 26, 2007 08:36 PM

I love that vest and I prefer the understated myself. I don't have nearly enough vests. Is that your pattern as well?

Posted by: Julia at February 26, 2007 09:11 PM

Oh, what a great photo! Super urban and chic... love the vest, too!

Posted by: Mary-Heather at February 26, 2007 10:42 PM

Anna,

My most-used knits are also the plain ones- a stocking-stitch raglan cardigan in Cascade 220 and a drop shoulder cardigan out of some rustic, mule-spun wool from New England.

I wonder if Jemima wore out so quickly because you knit her at a loose gauge??

Posted by: Christina at February 26, 2007 11:38 PM

Adding my small voice to the fray: yes, please, do. I would love to have the vest pattern and suggestions for yarn choice.

Posted by: Penny at February 27, 2007 01:29 AM

Yes, if you could make the pattern available it would be much appreciated.

Posted by: Marcie at February 27, 2007 03:46 AM

pattern! please!

Posted by: Kat at February 27, 2007 09:48 AM

This is adorable - I like your understated look, and it's always nice to see people wearing their own knits.

Posted by: Heather at February 27, 2007 03:27 PM

Simple, chic and most importantly very wearable on a daily basis. Great design and fabulous photo. I agree - simple is best.

Posted by: carol at February 27, 2007 04:06 PM

I love your vest. Its interesting because I've contemplating knitting a vest (pullover) lately and had never considered a button up vest until seeing your lovely rendition. Thank you for the inspiration!

Posted by: loriz at February 27, 2007 06:01 PM

Oh I think you should offer up pictures of absolutely everything you knit....they would such inspiration. Love this photo...is it spring in England yet? I have started "Claude" yay!

Posted by: Leslie at February 27, 2007 06:27 PM

Yes, please....a pattern! Lovely!

Posted by: angela at February 27, 2007 06:59 PM

What a fantastic photo!Brimful of vintage London chic!
And while simple pieces aren't often the most interesting to knit (I haven't your speed) they're usually the ones we fall in love with.

Posted by: Alison at February 27, 2007 08:18 PM

such a lovely photo on a such a lovely girl....please, please, tell us you will sell the pattern....I'd love to wear it as well.

Posted by: cassie kemp at February 28, 2007 07:33 PM

Posted by: Vicki at February 28, 2007 08:31 PM

I lovelovelove it!

Posted by: Leisl at February 28, 2007 08:49 PM

It is so easy to live in Jemima. I love mine so much that I decided to make a second one in rich, 'adult' colours. Oh, and I'm a big tweed addict too.

Posted by: Kirstin at March 1, 2007 02:57 AM

I love it.

I'd love to be able to buy the pattern.

Posted by: Emily S. at March 1, 2007 05:30 AM

i just love all your patterns.. but i'm a beginner knitter (only done the lelah tube/tank pattern as a wearable), and afraid its all toooo tough for me! does anyone hv any advice on which is the easiest pattern of anna's that i can start on? thanks!

Posted by: miserylovescompany at March 1, 2007 03:36 PM

I would wear that *all* the time! It looks just the sort of thing to kick start my knitting mojo. Hope there's a pattern in the offing!

Posted by: Noo at March 1, 2007 05:30 PM

The vest is lovely in its simplicity. Your post made me think of a favourite poem by Ben Jonson. "Still to be neat"
Still to be neat, still to be dressed,
As you were going to a feast;
Still to be powdered,still perfumed:
Lady, it is to be presumed,
Though art's hid causes are not found,
All is not sweet, all is not sound.

Give me a look, give me a face
That makes simpicity a grace;
Robes loosely flowing, hair as free:
Such sweet neglect more taketh me
Than all the adulteries of art;
They strike mine eyes, but not my heart.

It's beautiful Anna.

Posted by: Nora at March 2, 2007 10:04 AM

I love this little vest, too, Anna! In fact, I think I'll start figuring out how to make one -- I think I'd get a lot of wear out of it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Posted by: alison at March 2, 2007 03:21 PM

Oftentimes those little projects are the best ones. I tend to knit more classic pieces, that aren't so showy or extravagant in their design, but those are the pieces that get the most wear for me, so I love knitting them. The vest looks great and I'm glad it's one of your favorites.

Posted by: Wanda at March 2, 2007 05:57 PM

maybe my favorite "model" shot so far. nothing against your darling visage, of course. just. the wind. the wet. the buildings. I like it lots.

Posted by: Daphne at March 2, 2007 10:40 PM

I would love to buy the Bridie pattern. Is it Autumn yet? It is in Australia!

Posted by: Jane at March 2, 2007 10:54 PM

How lovely! I have a deep fondness for vests, although I used to fear it was a bit "nerdy". However, I feel rather vindicated by the fact that you are a vest girl yourself. It's the perfect little topper, isn't it?

Posted by: Gina at March 3, 2007 04:25 AM

I can absolutely see why you would wear that every day - it's a real liveable in garment. And so simple :0)

Posted by: Heather at March 3, 2007 09:14 AM

I love it, it's so English. Great photo too!

Posted by: Liz at March 4, 2007 11:24 AM

That weather is so typical of the weather at the moment. I have bought the yarn for Pippa so shall soon-ish have one of my own to integrate into my wardrobe. x

Posted by: Amelia at March 4, 2007 04:26 PM

Like so many others, I'd love such a versatile vest.
Pattern pretty please?

Posted by: Nicole at March 5, 2007 12:55 AM

Will you make the pattern available? (or is it already?) Share the love! We're all drooling!

I like the shoes. Do you buy online? Where are your haunts?

Whatever happened to the grey piece (name?)--the one you wore with a dress on a transAtlantic flight recently? Please don't tell me you don't wear it (you say you don't wear your own knits much), it was great. And the description you gave, of how wearing a dress and long cardi was like wearing your nightie and robe, was so perfect (I do that, too, on flights!).

This looks like a pattern you might want to consider sharing! I am with you, the items that wear out are often the simplest, easiest to wear, and that go with everything. Nice photo!

Posted by: Birdsong at March 6, 2007 03:21 AM

Anna, that is such a great, simple piece. Now I'm dreaming of one! I'd also love the pattern, but in the meantime, what yarn and how much did you use?

Love your vest creation and lovely photo!

It could be the way your hair was styled or the location, but it seems very new romantic :)
