We are still knitting

And yet, and yet, and yet. We have so little to show.

swatches

Baby socks for my yoga teacher. Swatch for a ginormous cabled cardigan, now knitted and only awaiting blocking and buttons. Swatch in blue heather Cascade 220 for a fitted, asymmetric, princess-seamed equestrian jacket - knitted but awaiting seaming. Swatch in glorious Fable Alpaca, with a zig-zag slipstitch pattern, design fully conceived and awaiting download from my brain and into written instructions. Swatch in Debbie Bliss Pure Silk – a leaf pattern in stranded colourwork, but not reading as clearly as I would like. Maybe green out of white would be easier to see than white out of green, or maybe it's more trouble that it is worth and would be better in a nice houndstooth or herringbone instead.

You see, as previously intimated, I have this weekend signed and returned in triplicate a contract committing to producing one entire book by February next. Which feels terrifying and ridiculous at the same time. The thing won't be in print until Spring 09, so I take some comfort in knowing that no actual knitter will ever read said book – by then we will all have knitted through our stashes and be finding creative outlet through macrame, or Fimo.

In consequence, Fashionable Life bulletins are likely to be somewhat thin on the ground for the next six months, although I hope to keep you sweet with the occasional project which I can share, and self-publish too. Dear reader, I know you are forgiving. If you demanded daily, even weekly updates, you would long ago have cancelled your subscription to these irregular pages.

And now, as any good procrastinator should, I'm going to avoid knitting by sowing seeds for this year's vegetable garden. It is a glorious spring day. The irony is not lost on me that, in previous years, I have procrastinated on sowing seeds by knitting instead.

I definately want to see that cable cardi when you have done it.

Posted by: colin at April 1, 2007 03:44 PM

Congrats on the book!

Posted by: erin at April 1, 2007 04:09 PM

I want to see them all. But especially the leaf colourwork. What a stunning idea!It reminds me of watered silk wallpaper. It's beautiful.
And don't be silly, of course we won't have knitted through our stashes by 2009 and of course it's going to be a fantastic book.Congratulations!

Btw finished Flicca.Hurrah! It's great but will be even better once blocked.

Posted by: Alison at April 1, 2007 04:14 PM

Goodness gracious--I haven't ever been this excited about a blogger getting a book deal. I don't want to make you nervous, but there will be at least 1 knitter reading that book.

Posted by: Rose at April 1, 2007 04:15 PM

Oh, my dear Anna, I am so happy for you! I am so happy for me, as your book will be a treasure, no doubt. I have every confidence. Can I pre-order now???
; )

Posted by: Vicki at April 1, 2007 04:17 PM

Congratulations on your book deal. That's awesome. I'm sure your book will be wonderful. I love all of your designs.

Posted by: Wanda at April 1, 2007 04:18 PM

Woo! Congrats on book! Will definitely be buying it, as my stash will last well into 2010.

Posted by: pamela wynne at April 1, 2007 04:31 PM

A Book - How exciting. Congratulations! I always look forward to seeing your current projects. Even your swatches are beautiful.

Posted by: kim at April 1, 2007 04:40 PM

congrats!! I know your book will be full of stylish and gorgeous knits.

Posted by: yahaira at April 1, 2007 04:46 PM

Congratulations and good luck on your book!

Posted by: Ellen at April 1, 2007 04:51 PM

Wow, congratulations!! I'm so happy for you!

Posted by: --Deb at April 1, 2007 04:52 PM

How did you know I was making macrame plant holders with fimo beads? That is just uncanny. There will be no danger of running out of stash or shortage of knitters. Lovely swatches, I am especially loving the zig zag.

Posted by: Sonya at April 1, 2007 05:04 PM

Congratulations on the book, Anna! I think you have a great sense of style, and I'm looking forward to seeing your book in print. Even if it's a long way off!

Re: stranded colorwork and yarn dominance. I like the subtlety that you have there, but because you want more oomph, you'll have to make whatever yarn that wasn't the background color, the background color. This post will make sense to you:

Posted by: MJ at April 1, 2007 05:08 PM

congratulations on securing the book deal. i will be eagerly awaiting its release, regardless of the status of my stash. good luck and enjoy the spring weather!

Posted by: dileri at April 1, 2007 05:11 PM

Anna - I am so happy for you! How exciting with a book! Did you know that I found your web site by searching on my own first name (same as yours) and yours was the first blog to come up! I don't knit, but love reading about knitting!!

Posted by: Anna at April 1, 2007 05:24 PM

Congratulations on your book! I'm very excited for you and rest assured, my obsession will not have faded in only two years. Yay!

Posted by: Kelly at April 1, 2007 05:29 PM

Anna, I'm so excited for you. It must feel very good (and scary) to have such a big goal, and the deadline not so far off as it may seem. It hurts to have to wait two years to see your book but I know it will be worth the wait, and every bit as lovely and as elegantly written as this journal.

Don't be too much of a stranger though, hmm?

Posted by: jodi at April 1, 2007 05:32 PM

How exciting, I am so pleased for you. And scared at the same time. However, if you are anything like me, you will procrastinate until the very last minute, then be amazed at how much you can achieve in a small amount of time....and then wonder how much else you could have achieved had you started earlier! I have just accepted this fact now, it makes life so much easier!!!! Well done x

Posted by: Liz at April 1, 2007 05:44 PM

Congrats on the book. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Posted by: Tove at April 1, 2007 06:01 PM

Many congrats! That is very exciting. PS. That alpaca swatch looks suspiciously like a stitch design I have in my head and can't work out, so I am very excited to see what you do with it!

Posted by: ann at April 1, 2007 06:21 PM

Congratulations! I knew there must be a book in the works. And I just walked into my office from sowing my seeds for this summer -- three kinds of basil and some cherry tomatoes!

Posted by: Ruth at April 1, 2007 06:23 PM

Congratulations! I'm amazed that it will take so long to come out though - what do they do with a manuscript for a whole year?

Good luck with getting the colourwork to click - maybe you need to up the contrast a bit? I've been frustrated before by colours I thought would be perfect and then just melted together.

And macrame you think? Really? ;-)

Posted by: Diane at April 1, 2007 06:35 PM

A pattern book of your designs? Where do I pre-order? :)

Posted by: grumperina at April 1, 2007 06:58 PM

I don't think I've commented here before, but I wanted to say congratulations on your new book, and I'm sure it will be a success. And also to observe that once something takes on the appearance of work, it immediately becomes the object of my procrastination, even if it formerly gave me great pleasure to do it. Have fun in your garden!

Posted by: Olga at April 1, 2007 07:06 PM

Congratulations! It's very exciting. I know it will be wonderful.

Posted by: Collette at April 1, 2007 07:18 PM

Ah yes, there's always macrame...or paint by numbers. Looking forward to the book - and getting Flicca sewn up. I started our seeds today as well here in NY in the cold frame. Happy Spring!

Posted by: Alexis at April 1, 2007 08:55 PM

We're not going anywhere. Come Spring 09, I'll be in line at the bookstore. :)

Posted by: nikki at April 1, 2007 09:05 PM

Congratulations!! That's wonderful news, I can't wait to read it. :)

Posted by: Mandy at April 1, 2007 09:11 PM

Congrats on the book deal and thanks for the tantalizing peek at those swatches. I guess we'll have to be patient!

Posted by: connie at April 1, 2007 09:15 PM

Oh, I'm confident I have enough stash to knit beyond 2009. Can't wait to see your book!
And colourwork in pure silk? WOW.

Posted by: yuvee at April 1, 2007 09:34 PM

Congratulations from across the pond! Your wonderful and unique designs will definitely make for a "must buy" book!

Posted by: Fredda at April 1, 2007 09:57 PM

I add my voice to the chorus of excited knitters. A book full of your stylish designs and elegant words is a book I want in my collection.

As for my stash running out before 2009... I think my stash can outlast me. And I am only 25.

Posted by: Heather G. at April 1, 2007 10:03 PM

Congratulations- very exciting news. I had been thinking surely such an undertaking was only a matter of time! I hope your work with the needles and the seeds both bear abundant fruits!!

Posted by: di at April 1, 2007 10:24 PM

"...so I take some comfort in knowing that no actual knitter will ever read said book..."

My sweet beeehind - I've already popped the date into my Outlook calendar! I am so looking forward to seeing your work.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 1, 2007 11:01 PM

Darn! The last commenter was me *blush*

Posted by: Leisl at April 1, 2007 11:02 PM

How lovely that you will have a book! If it is anything like your blog, it will be truly special. I do hope that one of the patterns you will post on your self-publish will be the Blustery....I am still wishing to knit that truly simple and oh, so British vest! (She selfishly wished this, knowing full well that Anna was overwhelmed already :)

Posted by: cassie kemp at April 1, 2007 11:15 PM

Congratulations and I look forward to purchasing your book in Spring of '09. That's such a long time away, hope that little vest pattern will be written and offered for sale as consolation.

Posted by: Penny at April 2, 2007 12:41 AM

I knew you were busy! Sweet news!

Posted by: Dava at April 2, 2007 12:51 AM

Congratulations Anna! How wonderful for you!

Posted by: Debi at April 2, 2007 01:24 AM

Anna- yippee, a book! I agree with you about the green stranded swatch-- from far away it *sort of* looks like a leafy pattern, but when I opened the picture up bigger, it just looked like varigated yarn.

Posted by: Christina at April 2, 2007 01:36 AM

i hate to tell you this...but i am expecting my own personal signed copy! i will accept nothing less.

congratulations my dear...i am absolutely thrilled for you. i have said to you from the start that you deserved great things!

Posted by: jacqueline at April 2, 2007 01:37 AM

Oh goodness. This is good news. But does this mean that the most recent vest won't be available on your website? I've been checking ever since for the updated pattern.

Posted by: Stacia at April 2, 2007 01:48 AM

Much in the way of congratualations in order for landing a book deal! I will still be knitting... either a reflection on my general slowness or the size of my stash, though I am not sure which will win that distinction.

Posted by: Birdsong at April 2, 2007 02:48 AM

Congrats Anna! I will be reading your book even if I have taken up basket weaving for snake charmers!

Posted by: Leah at April 2, 2007 03:32 AM

Oh, Anna, how WONDERFUL! Yeah for you. Of course we will all read it and of course it will be a fabulous success. Your designs are so clean and wonderful . . . even if knitting where on the "outs" your book would surely bring it back "in" once more. I KNOW it.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAH for YOU!!!!!

Posted by: knittingnurse at April 2, 2007 04:12 AM

Congratulations! And I hope you enjoy the process of writing and publishing a book. It sounds very exciting.

Posted by: Francesca at April 2, 2007 05:20 AM

Congratulations Anna! You SO deserve this book contract and I SO look forward to its publication.

Posted by: nona at April 2, 2007 05:56 AM

Hey, I'll read it! Great job getting a book deal.

Posted by: Emily S. at April 2, 2007 06:15 AM

Congratulations on the book! And enjoy the gardening - there's nothing like procrastination to turn mundane chores into fascinating experiences.

Posted by: Jesse at April 2, 2007 07:06 AM

I wish you good luck and that you enjoy every minute of producing your book in between the gardening and knitting, or perhaps that should be vice versa.

Posted by: Teresa at April 2, 2007 07:18 AM

How wonderful! Congratulations and best wishes for a soothing and low-stress creation process for the book. I'm really, really looking forward to it! (Fimo? Been there, done that. :) )
Hope you had a wonderful day gardening! Procrastination is just a short-handed way of describing the incubation process of brilliant ideas!
(About the lovely colorwork swatch, I'm inclined to say that green leaves on white will show up better...)

Posted by: Marie at April 2, 2007 09:09 AM

Wow - great news about the book. Looking forward to Spring 09 already.

Posted by: Susan at April 2, 2007 09:57 AM

Congratulations! I look forward to seeing your book. That alpaca swatch is lovely, both stitch pattern and color.

Posted by: Angela at April 2, 2007 10:08 AM

I want your book. I know that I will have stashes of yarn just waiting for one of your patterns.

Please give us a heads up as to where to preorder. I must admit, I'm not knitting half as much as I used to, but it's because I've become much more discriminating of where I choose to use my time and stash.

I await your efforts eagerly.

Posted by: dodgy at April 2, 2007 10:47 AM

Congratulations on the book! I'm thrilled for you and can't wait to see your designs.

I'll definitely still be in the market for a good knitting book as I confess that my own stash will keep me knitting well into 2009 and beyond...

Posted by: Anita at April 2, 2007 12:41 PM

I was hoping you were working on a book! Congratulations!

If you think there's any possibility that I, for one, will have knitted through my stash when your book is published ... well, then it's clear you've never seen my stash! :)

Posted by: Laura at April 2, 2007 12:46 PM

Congratulations - I for one am very happy that you have a book deal and will still even if only occasionally blog and sell some of your patterns on line. And no - I certainly won't have knit through my stash by 2009 or have traded it all in for fimo!

Posted by: carol at April 2, 2007 01:53 PM

Congrats on the book! I know its going to be full of great designs!

Posted by: Diana at April 2, 2007 02:09 PM

a book!!! congratulations!!!! we are definitely looking forward to it!

Posted by: Janice at April 2, 2007 03:45 PM

Very good. 2009 is right around the corner... but not so soon you don't have time to create truly excellent designs to fill it up. This variety makes me think it's going to be a truly excellent book.

Posted by: Daphne at April 2, 2007 04:23 PM

A book out in Spring of 09?! Congrats! I always knew you could do it. I'll be first on line to buy it, can't wait.

Good luck!

Posted by: Liz at April 2, 2007 04:39 PM

Oh how wonderful - congratulations Anna! My favourite bloggers are becoming authors all over the shop, wonderful. And I can guarantee I will be in line for the book when it eventually hits the big wide world. I can't wait to see the finished equestrian jacket, I love that fitted look you create so beautifully. Thank you for lightening our days with your musings and beautiful designs - we will be loyal to you over the coming months, with the promise of what is to come...

especially because I want to see what that lilac swatch becomes!

Posted by: stinkerbell at April 2, 2007 06:05 PM

Congratulations Anna, you thoroughly deserve this break. Will be sending you many good vibes for the coming 6 months! Best, Kirsty

Posted by: Kirsty at April 2, 2007 08:14 PM

*Scream* Wow, exciting news on your book deal. Many congrats, so well deserved.

Posted by: Estee at April 2, 2007 10:02 PM

I think green out of white would be much easier to see. Pretty colors. Love the cable booties. I'm working on a pair that I adapted from Ann Budd's Chevron Lace booties in Interweave. I'm using a different yarn (Fixations) and only did 3 panel repeats on the legs, none on the top of the foot, but I am using the short row heel for both the heel and the toe, as she did. They look *really* nice. Congrats on your book deal! Very exciting:)

Posted by: angelarae at April 3, 2007 04:29 AM

Hooray for the book! *I* will be reading it for sure. Yay!

Posted by: Jenny at April 3, 2007 05:27 AM

I'm with grumperina on the pre-order. your designs are lovely. (plus I must have my hands on bridie...someday, it shall be mine!) I am still in school and shall surely not tire of knitting in merely two years. Besides, stashes only run out if one never buys any yarn...

Posted by: Emily at April 3, 2007 06:10 AM

PS--about the green and white silk. I think it's really pretty with green as the background. might a tighter gauge help? or a smaller version of the same pattern? and the cabled sweater--that's an exciting proposition...

Posted by: Anonymous at April 3, 2007 06:12 AM

oops that was me again, hence the PS. apologies for the triple-layer comment.

Posted by: Emily at April 3, 2007 06:13 AM

Good for you! Oh, it will be so hard to wait for this book...

Posted by: Max at April 3, 2007 11:34 AM

Posted by: Jennifer at April 3, 2007 08:41 PM

It's so exciting that knit bloggers are getting book deals. I've been following your blog for a while now and I enjoy your writing style as much as your eye for design. Any book that you publish will do very well here in the U.S. Congratulations!

Posted by: Kathy L. at April 4, 2007 12:30 AM

Great news!! Love your patterns & your sense of style and I just know your book will be every bit as effortless as you. I will definitely buy it! Congratulations.

Huzzah on the book contract! That is so exciting! I'm working through my first pattern of yours (Cherry) and it's brilliant. I can't wait to see what you do with a whole book!

Posted by: Sarah at April 4, 2007 03:30 PM

Oh yay! I had hoped I was right about the little hints you were dropping :) I really love your patterns, so simple and elegant, and rest assured I will be knocking down the doors of my bookseller the first chance I hear of your publication. Congratulations!

Posted by: emily at April 4, 2007 09:19 PM

I've never commented here before, but I love your blog. Congratulations on the book contract, and I will be knitting slowly but surely, and waiting for your appearance, in '09. Meanwhile, posts about your gardening are always welcome.

Posted by: Tracy at April 5, 2007 11:36 AM

I'm delighted that you're writing a book, and 2009 can't come quickly enough for me. Your blog is great and your patterns are great, so I'm sure the book will be also.

Posted by: marjorie at April 5, 2007 03:57 PM

Spring '09? AU CONTRAIRE, by then (maybe) I will have learned to make things other than plain scarves, hats and plain baby jumpers. I shall put myself on the amazon waiting list as soon as you can provide us with the link! How very exciting.

And the equestrian jacket sounds very interesting, I look forward to seeing that.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 6, 2007 08:38 PM
