So long, old boy

isy and elliot

These are two of my favourite people. The one on the right, with the long face, made his final journey today, to the Great Paddock in the Sky. He was my darling sister's horse, a companion for the last 14 years, and I hope his loss will not leave her too bereft, for too long.

He was a Good Boy (Isy disagrees on this point), but not too good. In fact, he was sometimes bad. He had a big personality, the world's most uncomfortable trot, and a beautiful, deep copper summer coat. He never scared me, which is more than can be said of many horses.

Thanks for taking care of me when we rode together - sorry it wasn't more often. We'll miss your brown face looking over the stable door. We'll miss you arguing with your neighbours. We'll miss your grumps, and your gnashing teeth when we do up your girth. You always tried very hard to be good, and you sometimes failed, but we appreciated the effort.

Goodbye, Elliot.

So sorry to hear of your buddy Elliot. Great name. My youthful companion was Judd. They cannot be replaced, only fondly remembered.

What a sweet face. My condolences.

It's amazing how these gentle giants enrich our lives. May your fond memories get you thru this grief.

I'm so sorry to hear your friend has made his last journey. He is looking beautiful. For five years I took care of a pony in a family that had lived in Britain for ten years before. Your "good boy" made me remember them and my care pony, we talked in English to the horses, since they all were English, and always said gooood boy, even if we all spoke Swedish together.

I have two horses and I lost a third two years ago. It's a painful decision to make, but I think they know we're doing it out of love. My condolences to your family on the loss of Elliot. He's trotting merrily in Heaven.

His expression is both fly and sweet. He must have been a horse of character. My condolences to both you and your sister

So sorry to hear about your gentle friend. The best ones are sure to have their bad moments. That's why we love them.

I was just going to comment on your upcoming knitting book and how I can hardly wait to purchase it when available but when I clicked on to your home page I saw the picture of your sister's dearly departed horse. I hope that he has gone to the great pasture in the sky and that you can still enjoy your memories of him and the pleasure he gave you. As an adolescent I spent the majority of my time at a riding academy, both looking after the horses and taking long and wonderful rides in the countryside. Needless to say, I have an affinity to horses, I think they are the most wonderful and majestic animals in creation. Anyway, post when you can. I am always interested in your designing adventures. Good luck with completing your projects.

What would life be without our animals? They are such a comfort, even when they're brats. And it is unutterably sad when they leave us.

Heartfelt (long distance, electronic) condolences to you and your sister.

Oh, I'm sorry. Goodbye Elliot. And I hope your sister is ok.

Ach, I'm sorry Anna. There seems to be a spate of horses going to That Great Pasture In The Sky. You had goood memories, and that's what matters.

I'm so sorry. There's nothing worse than losing a cherished friend, and for some reason a horse is always the hardest for me. The ones with the personalities are the only ones to have - I have 3 that I would say are good, but not too good and have personality to spare. I know Elliot will be giving some young girl rides and a soft nose to nuzzle for a long time in a wonderful place.

Sad news. It's always a wrench when you lose an animal. They're part of the family and 'people' like you say. Hope you're all doing ok. x

Dear Amelia-
I just linked to your site by way of Brooklyn Tweed.
I look forward to the pattern for Bridie or is it Birdie? Please let me know if I could get it sooner than autumn, I have a vision of shorter sleeves and fine white cotton to get through the doldrums of summer and be washable!
Thanks-
I love your photos and your writing, isn't life so much better when you are making things?

:( Big hugs. I am sure they have lots of carrots ready for him in the Big Paddock. xx

Ah, I'm so sorry. I was/am a rider, and my daughter is falling head over heels for horses at the moment ... there's something special about the bond between a good horse and his girl(s).

What a great face Elliot had. Truly, my condolences to you and your sister.

Animals give us so much and it is painful when we must part from them.

Congratulations on the new life coming. Amazing. Never ceases to amaze me.
