Incredulous
Soon, we will be sharing our home with someone who wears socks this size:
And whose father wears socks this size:
Hilarious. Can any human bean have feet this small? Does anyone have a newborn to hand whose feet they can measure?

Congratulations! How exciting!

I don't have a newborn on hand, but my sister loved all the booties and socks I made because she said they were the only things that stayed on the little wiggly feet!
Congratulations!

I had a baby about a year ago, but I have her footprints that I can measure. I am on the baby bandwagon with you though and I am due in November. So Congrats, it's a very exciting time. Hope that you arent too sick and if you are, it will get better.

Oh they definitely do have wee feet Amelia - depending on the size of the baby of course ! I still remember wondering at my brand new daughter (now 12 going on 20) and her tiny little 2½ inch feet. But let's just say they don't stay that way for long so enjoy knitting small while you can :0)
Posted by: Heather at July 3, 2007 07:04 PM
oops sorry - meant Anna of course ! Must engage brain before pressing post ....
Posted by: Heather at July 3, 2007 07:05 PM
They do, truly! Usually. Though I have a friend who just had a normal-sized baby with monster feet, and those certainly wouldn't have fit him.
Posted by: Ruth at July 3, 2007 07:21 PM
So small! Apparently my feet were the size of my mother's big toe!
Posted by: Victoria at July 3, 2007 07:39 PM
Oh yes, they really do start off that small, but it doesn't last long! :-)
Posted by: LaurieM at July 3, 2007 08:39 PM
My son is going on four (already! so quickly!) so I can't help with the measurement. I remember knitting some "stay-on booties" that were about 2.5 inches long, 15 garter ridges in koigu as I recall. Go for stretchy, though, because those delicious tootsies don't stay 2 inches for very long.

So cute! You must be knitting like mad for your bundle of joy :)

Congratulations!!! I'm sure I'm not the first or last to tell you -- but your life will never be the same -- in a VERY wonderful way!!!
Posted by: Thimbleanna at July 3, 2007 09:14 PM
Well, it's true -- little babies have the teensy tiniest feet! They sure do grow fast, though. You won't believe it. I kept one of the newborn diapers in with all the baby treasures I couldn't bear to part with -- and it amazes me that my 22, 20 and 16yo EVER wore them (with room to spare, even, as I recall).
Posted by: Vicki at July 3, 2007 09:16 PM
Some of them do, although both of mine were born with enormous feet - never fitted into newborn clothes either. Enjoy knitting the small things, even the tiny ones grow fast!
Posted by: Mary at July 3, 2007 09:19 PM
Isn't it amazing? And to think that eventually that little person's feet will be the same size (or close anyway) to Daddy's. I'm very excited for you!!

So tiny. . . it is just so amazing!
Posted by: Stephanie at July 3, 2007 09:47 PM
And their toes are little pink pearls. So sweet... But you'd better have the next size ready pretty soon :)
Posted by: Max at July 3, 2007 11:34 PM
I knew it wouldn't take you long to knit a little something for you new 'little something'!!! Very tiny but they won't last long in that size. Cherish those 'baby' moments. And Daddy's socks are fabulous too!
Posted by: Diana at July 4, 2007 12:00 AM
Each time I brought home our newborn, I saved the socks each wore. I then strung the socks together and each year they get hung on the Christmas tree. It always brings tears to my eyes to hold those socks again. They are so tiny and now my boys are so big!
Posted by: Kate/Massachusetts at July 4, 2007 12:11 AM
Congratulations!! The yarn is fabulous!
I love the foot size contrast!
Posted by: Mokihana at July 4, 2007 12:23 AM
What's really going to bake your noodle is the first little bit where all those tiny "newborn" sized clothes are so big that your little munchkin swims in them. The clothes looked small enough on the hanger in the store, but that just underscores how itty-bitties they really are. And, as others have said, enjoy, film, and photograph every second because it really is gone soooo fast. It feels like mine's already going off to college next week and I just had her last year! :)
Posted by: Jade at July 4, 2007 02:01 AM
Congratulations! I don't have a newborn handy but can attest that their and hands are indeed extremely teeny!
Posted by: Marie at July 4, 2007 02:07 AM
Ooh yes! Their feet ARE that tiny. Make sure to take each moment in though. Their feet, hands, bodies, etc. grow WAY faster than you can ever imagine or prepare for!
Posted by: knittingnurse at July 4, 2007 02:24 AM
No new born here either - my two are 14 and 11 years of age now, and the eldest in particular has feet going on the size of the green socks. But, yes they do have tiny feet and hands. How I remember being so enchanted by their tiny, perfect little hands and feet. Enjoy them while they are small as it really is a fleeting moment of time.
Posted by: Carol at July 4, 2007 02:31 AM
YUPPPP they really are that small, try thinking about how they have to arrive and consider this a nice side of nature that they make baby that small LOL ;)
Posted by: cairi at July 4, 2007 10:13 AM
Newborns feet are indeed teeny tiny - and also the most adorable things imaginable. Delicate and soft, never having had to carry around the weight of their body. Oh I'm feeling broody just thinking about them! Congratulations by the way.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS with the new member of the family to come.
Yes, as all the others tell you, baby feet are very tiny. But for a very short time.
My Mathilde had 8cm feet when born and now, when she is 6months, her feet are around 11cm.
Be sure not only to knit in the tiny sizes, because you will proberly not have time to knit, once he/she is here. Not for the first few months though.
If you are short on fantastic patterns feel free to email me. I hav louds of realy lovely ones.
Hugs from Trine in Denmark

I don't have a newborn to hand, but I know that everybody always stands around saying, 'Oooh, you forget how small they are...' Except for my great-nephew Finlay where we all stood around speechless because he was so big, but that's another matter. That's an enchanting photo.
Posted by: Helen at July 4, 2007 01:51 PM
Congratulations! you must be soooo incredibly excited :)
Posted by: emily elizabeth at July 4, 2007 02:51 PM
I do! Well a 10 week old who was over 6 weeks weeks early - does that count? He was due June 31st but came on April 16th so he is about the size of a four week old. His feet are a shade(millimetres?) over 9 cm long from centre heel (base of foot) to end of big toe. I would try to be more accurate but I don't want to wake him - I need a power nap! Hope that helps :)

CONGRATULATIONS!! How exciting for you!!
Posted by: Jen in Chicago at July 4, 2007 06:44 PM
well, he's 6 days old and weighed just over 6lbs and his feet are 7cms long. The socks that DH made for him from an online newborn pattern are too big for him!
The sock looks very cute, enjoy the baby knitting!
Posted by: Anna at July 4, 2007 09:53 PM
I don't know nothing about (sizing for)no babies but CONGRATULATIONS Anna! :)
Posted by: Debi at July 4, 2007 10:44 PM
I often felt like the fairies exchanged my babies for larger ones when I wasn't looking. Oh, how I mourned the loss of their wee little bodies, but always found that their new, larger bodies were just as joyful.

What a cute way to make an announcement! I trolled onto your site (via Brooklyntweed) for some knitting inspiration and saw the wee tiny socks. As a mom for 3 robust and tall children, I strongly urge you to start knitting the 3-, 6-, and 12-mo size stuff TODAY. Mine were little for, like, a month. And I'm not a big person (5'6", 125 lbs). So don't make too many itty bitty things -- but keep the ones you do so you can remember!. Congrats! (:
Posted by: marilyn at July 5, 2007 04:13 AM
One thing is certain, those wee feet won't fit in those little zebra stripes for long!
Posted by: Siri at July 5, 2007 06:11 AM
Aaaaah what sweet socks; love the stripes against the green....

Baby socks (and shoes) are some of the things that make me go squishiest inside. They are just .. so .. small!
I have a friend who is 6'3". We once traipsed into his family kitchen in walking boots covered in mud, and as it was pouring outside tried to scrape our boots into the sink, which didn't please his mum all that much. So she went and fetched us a washing up bowl, and then, looking on as he attempted to keep the dropping mud falling in the direction of the bowl that was no bigger than his boot, said wonderingly 'I used to give you your bath in that bowl'. When we had emptied the mud outside and rinsed the bowl we laughed to find his foot barely fitted inside the container that once held the whole of him and some water! His mum passed away some years ago and that day is one of my happiest memories with her. Thanks for reminding me of it xxo

They are only that size for days, I'm afraid. I wouldn't advise making too many things in the first size because babies grow like weeds. Nice to have something special for those first few days and weeks, though.
Hope you're staying well!

You've started me pondering the quaint scenario in which a young wife "announces" to her husband that a baby is on the way by suddenly taking up the knitting of tiny garments. I'm thinking maybe Nick and Nora from one of the Thin Man movies? Or was it It's a Wondeful Life? Maybe other movies as well?
I'm happy for you.

must update my bloglines... sheesh I am late to the party, but so very very happy for you Anna!
Congratulations (now what to knit for the little one :)

Baby socks are just...so...cute! I am knitting some for an expectant friend -- they are 3" long and I hope they fit.
Congratulations to you and your husband! It is clear that you will have a very well-dressed baby :).

Congratulations!! And yes, I'm pretty sure their feet are that small.
Posted by: Sneaksleep at July 5, 2007 06:21 PM
many congratulations! i love baby knitwear. i could just eat the booties and hats, they are so tiny and cute. nothing is more satisfying to create because it always cute and goes so fast!
Posted by: lena at July 5, 2007 06:56 PM
Yes, it is very possible - they're feet really are that tiny. Very best wishes!
Posted by: Sarah at July 5, 2007 08:40 PM
I've found that the baby booties from LMKG seem to consistently fit their newborn recipients, and they're about 3-4 inches from heel to toe. However, even though baby feet may come out tiny, they grow very quickly!
Posted by: parikha at July 5, 2007 09:44 PM
Congrats!
Posted by: isabel at July 6, 2007 08:27 AM
Congrats!
I'd recommend a three-inch foot if you want them to fit for more than a couple of weeks.
Posted by: cari at July 7, 2007 03:42 AM
So cute, but as others have pointed out they do grow!
Although I suppose with you as their mum the heir will never be short of stripey socks!
Posted by: Alison at July 7, 2007 09:06 AM
If I were to do it again, I think I would knit ribbed tube socks that could go up high, that way they will fit for longer. The feet of babies vary so much. Some are fat. Some are long. Some are neither. Some are both. And they change so quickly. Plus, the higher the sock goes, the better. Unless they are very well-fitted, they tend to fall off. The ribbing could help that.

I have been reading your blog for a while now and I really love your knitting. I am from the U.S. and I am coming to London for about a month (my first time). I'm leaving in a week and I was wondering if you could recommend a good yarn store. Thanks!
Posted by: Maggie at July 8, 2007 02:45 PM
Hee. It's amazing how tiny they are, eh? Big congratulations. :)

Congratulations on your news Anna! I love your website, and on my next holidays I'm going to try your 'spindle' socks pattern. My brother and his wife are expecting a baby in September and I am currently making some booties for them. I just finished one this morning, and I love it so much I thought I would share it with you. You can download the pattern for free from http://www.spotlight.com.au/__data/page/8602/Baby_Booties.pdf

Hey... I just wanted to say how happy I am for you! I found your blog a couple of months ago, and went on to read through everything in 2 days or so. You have such an elegant way of writing. I think your designs are absolutely stunning and I'm waiting anxiously for a pattern for bridie... That's my favourite. And Blustery, too. This evening I cast on something very inspired by the Spindle socks and it is very exciting and simple at the same time... Yay...
All the best to you, and maybe I'll pop up from my lurking position every once in a while from now on...

Lovely socks! And they're so quick to finish that size! Now I'm having trouble keeping up with the lengthening foot for my 4 year old. Then again, I tend to finish off the feet too soon on my own socks. And my feet stopped growing a while ago.

Oh my gosh - congratulations!!! What a sweet wee sock! Yay!!!
For measuring feet - when my little niece was born, her entire foot was smaller than my thumb - not much larger than the top joint of my thumb. Just a wisp of a foot I was speechless. :) Now she's 2 1/2 and I can have a conversation with her on the phone... kills me!
