I have not winced nor cried aloud

Is anyone still there? The past few weeks have been extremely busy, and the end is still far beyond the field of my focus, but you'll be glad to hear that, as the verse reads, I am as yet unbowed. Still, the feeling is definitely that I need some help, especially having been quite badly let down. And if I have learned anything about knitters over these last few years it is that you are kind, generous, and want to help.

So this is a call for test knitters. Before you jump off your seat to volunteer, please read the below: You are amazing! Thank you so much for every single offer of help! I can see I will have far more willing friends than pieces that need knitting, so let me give some thought to the best way of allocating knits to knitters. And if I may, I'll hold onto the details of everyone who's offered, because even if I'm not able to utilise your skills this time around I'm bound to want to in future.

I will pay you (no princely sum, but the equivalent for the size of project to what I would pay my usual knitters here in the UK), acknowledge your contribution, and give you (at my expense) a copy of the book when it is published. You will not be able to choose the colour or size of the project you knit, you will not be able to keep the project you knit. We will discuss what size of commitment you would be able to take on.

In return I will expect you to:
* Meet a mutually agreed deadline including allowing sufficient time for carriage
* Be party to a non-disclosure agreement
* Keep me informed of your progress
* Feed back on the pattern, including asking me if anything is unclear or starts to 'look wrong', rather than ploughing on regardless
* Be confident in your knitting skills.

There may be more, but that will do for now. If you leave me a comment below saying 'I'm interested', I'll get in touch to find out more. Or feel free to email me, if you have the address (I'm sure most of you do, all these years and I still haven't got around to putting a mailto link on the site).

Also, if you're still reading and still feeling helpful, I don't suppose you know of a good source for reasonably attractive and also reasonably cheap fabric tote bags, of the type suitable for keeping knitting projects in? Someone with more time and love for her sewing machine than I would whip up a half dozen of her own. At the moment I lack even time to knit a pair of booties for my dear burgeoning baby, my little loaf, so I must throw money at the problem instead, and rely on that other someone's industriousness. I tried 'etsy' but the search results were too huge and unwieldy: a personal recommendation would be far preferable, if you have one.

My dears, thank you for your patience and for being here with open hearts when I can be.

I'm interested, so sorry to hear that you have been let down, but glad to hear that you remain unbowed :)

I'd do it. The test knitting. I'd do the sewing too, but my machine appears to be dead.

I'm interested :)

Posted by: Kelly B at August 22, 2007 05:25 PM

I'm interested. I'm assuming the yarn will be supplied, right?

I wish I had a good tote bag source. I bought a bag at maptote.com a while back, I think the prices have gone up. They are nice, but the cotton is very thin.

I, too, am interested.

Posted by: Ruth at August 22, 2007 05:31 PM

I don't know what you have in mind when saying cheap, but Becky over at www.skinnyrabbit.com is a knitter who makes fabulous totes. You can see them here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5091375
or here:
http://www.shop.tortillagirl.com/
Looks like you have quite a lot of volunteers for testknitting already. Makes me happy to see, since my own scedule is too crammed for any projects at all, I have trouble finding time for my own knitting. Good luck with the book, I'm looking forward to see it!
And good luck with your baby!

Posted by: Maud at August 22, 2007 05:32 PM

I'm here! I just wanted to let you know I was here....but you don't want me as a test knitter, I'm way too slow!

I'm interested in being a test knitter.

I also have a small business - Knitting Ewe on the Go - right now I have "custom" project bags available.

I could do various sizes for you in any fabric you wanted.

I'm interested. I am located in Canada and have been a test knitter (and crocheter) before. I can provide references. Thanks!

Posted by: dana at August 22, 2007 05:49 PM

I'm interested in a small scale project, if you have those available.

Knitting bags with square or rectangular bottoms are fantastic. This makes them a little more pyramid like than rectangular or square draw string bag, but I find the flat bottom more practical. Due to my yarn eating dog, I have resorted to zip lock bags so he can't easily pull it out of a bag. There's a half-gallon size that has an expanding bottom.

Posted by: freecia at August 22, 2007 05:50 PM

I'm interested, assuming the yarn is provided (if not, sorry, money's been really tight lately and I have zero room in my budget for yarn right now.) Also, tortillagirl at etsy.com has several really cute totes that may or may not interest you.

Posted by: Rachael at August 22, 2007 05:50 PM

yipes. i'm interested - can I play, too?

Posted by: daniel at August 22, 2007 05:51 PM

I am ready, willing and able, an experienced knitter, have written a few patterns of my own, and could give you references to attest to my knitting ability if you so desire. I live in the US, though. Are you looking for knitters in the UK only? Test knitting for your book would be a thrill!

Posted by: Kim at August 22, 2007 05:53 PM

It sounds like you've got a lot of people already, but I'm also interested, also provided the yarn would be included. I hope things have been going well for you, I've missed your posts!

Posted by: Lily at August 22, 2007 05:53 PM

i, too, am interested :-)

Posted by: maria at August 22, 2007 05:57 PM

Ooh, let me jump on the "me too" wagon also. I live in US as well, but that shouldn't matter much, right? As long as I allow time for shipping? You can see a few things I've knit on my flickr page ( www.flickr.com/photos/jacqueline-w ). I've even been a test knitter before - but you won't see pictures of that because me, I can keep a secret :).

Posted by: Jacqueline at August 22, 2007 06:13 PM

Hello Anna,
I am new to the internet, but not to knitting!
I can' t wear all the stuff I knit for myself. I love your style and have ordered the book with the Bridie pattern in so I can knit it asap.
I would be pleased to "test drive" your patterns. I live in Nottingham.
Look forward to hearing from you.

See you have plenty of people interested, but I thought I'd just add my name. I live in Belgium, so not to far. I won't commit to really big patterns, but I managed to test-knit a pair of knee high socks in a week, so I can do something like that. If you need anyone else, feel free to let me know. I expect nothing in return but a picture of the "worn" object! :D

Greets from Belgium!

It seems like you have a lot of volunteers already, but I am also interested. I've done sample/test knitting in the US for Farmhouse Yarns (www.farmhousesyarns.com)and had always communicated and met deadlines.

As far as tote bag, I'm using a bag my cousin gave me for Christmas/birthday last year. She got it from here: http://www.designhergals.com/

You can design what the graphics on the tote and wording too. Mine has a girl resembles me with knitting needles on her hand with my blog name under it.

Hi Anna,

I'm going to add my name to the list of people interested in test knitting for you. I'm a pretty fast knitter-- I've knit a few samples for my LYS and a child's dress for Interweave Knits.

Posted by: Krista McCurdy at August 22, 2007 07:37 PM

I'm interested.

I can test sock patterns with some speed and authority, and if you're looking for someone who is a bit new to sweaters/jumpers - well, I've knit Twist and I'm midway up the front of Jemima, so I'm not completely idiotic about them, but I also am not at the point where I assume a lot. I am probably not as fast as some of the other ladies with them, though.

Wraps and shawls are the bane of my dyslexic existence, but I could be persuaded to knit a simple one.

:o)

I love so many of your designs; it would be a privilege to help out with test knitting. So please add me to the long list of names who are interested in helping out. I also have a bun in the oven so that might affect finishing on time depending on the deadline you're looking at.

Posted by: Sarah at August 22, 2007 09:57 PM

Yay for knitters! I'll add my name to the roll up the sleeves and knit list. I live in the US, but will have the luxury of a month off coming up in September, so I've got plenty of time to devote to your wonderful work. Hope the little loaf is rising steadily!

Posted by: Kylie at August 22, 2007 10:01 PM

I knew you would have a ton of people wanting to be a test knitter, but I thought I would throw my hat into the arena anyway. I would love to be a test knitter. I don't care about being paid; I just really enjoy doing things like this. I teach knitting classes every other week, but other than that, I'm home working on my own projects. I've been knitting and crocheting for 47 years (I'm 49 - my grandmother taught me all kinds of things as early as possible so I would be a "proper" lady. I have also test knitted before and really enjoyed the experience.

I never finish anything, so I'm not a prospect. However, tote bags? How many are you looking for and is there any way we can make arrangements for shipping from the US to the UK? My boss has over 2000 tote bags, 14 inches tall by 17 inches wide and 7 inches deep. They are canvas bags lined in plastic with a short handle. They have vintage Indian advertising on them; some with sequin trim (they are pretty hip looking, if I say so myself). I use mine for storing stash, carrying a load of laundry, even toting my jet printer and laptop--tough little totes! And $3 each. If you are interested (in 1 or a 1000), I will send you images. Any idea when the book will be ready? I can't wait!

Posted by: Dava at August 22, 2007 10:32 PM

Grr to people who let you down!
I'd test knit a smaller project if you still need anyone, plus I'm in London if that helps. As for totes, well you probably don't read http://www.scarygoround.com/ but check out his "Crochet Today" tote anyway! http://www.scarygoround.com/shop.php

Oooh, I just read Dava's comment above - I'd be interested in one of those totes too!

Posted by: karen at August 23, 2007 03:52 AM

I would happily test knit for you if you still need someone but I see that you already have plenty of talented offers.

My personal favorite bags for knitting projects come from a place called Camp Hill Village. I'm in the US, but I mention it because I know that the Camp Hill movement started in England and there are many more communities there than here.

My bags are made of study, beautiful hand-woven fabrics with a draw-string rope made of the same threads. The residents at the Camp Hill community in New York have a weavery, wood shop and bio-dynamic farm and they sell many of their works to help support their community which centers around supporting the lives of mentally disabled adults.

I'm certain that at least the English community at St. Albans has a weavery as well as a woodshop, but what I'm not at all certain of is where St Albans actually is. There are many other Camp Hill communities in England though so maybe there is one near you with a weavery. It's perhaps a bit overkill for simple knitting bags but the karma is excellent and they are beautiful.

re: the bags, there is a knitting store here in spain that gives out cotton totes with yarn purchases for storing your projects. i looked at the tag of one and believe they are purchased here http://www.mcollection.es/en/index.html.

i hope that helps!

i dont have the time to knit my own projects at the moment, but just wanted to say good luck on this endeavor! no need to respond to this, take care.

Posted by: no-blog marcie at August 23, 2007 02:40 PM

I've been knitting for ...um....a long time (decades...) and would be happy to test knit. I used to knit for a shop selling hand-knit sweaters...if experience counts. If you still need someonefor this or a later endeavour.

Stay well.

Posted by: Kate at August 23, 2007 03:05 PM

Having no illusions about the state of my own schedule I cannot, in good conscience, offer my services. However, I do offer my best wishes on both of your current projects and I hope they both go off without the slightest hitch.

anna I would heed any call to need that you have my dear.

I will be happy to test knit for you.

Posted by: SigMa at August 23, 2007 04:27 PM

I'm interested.

I'm a stay home mom near Seattle, WA. I've been knitting 10 years. I teach a few classes at Let It Rain Yarn (www.letitrain.com). I'm pregnant with my second child (35 weeks now), so as long as the deadline isn't Oct 9th I can do it. I'd consider myself an intermediate knitter, someone who's tried a number of techniques (cables, lace, design, etc) but still has new things to learn. Probably your perfect audience!

Posted by: Megan Dunn at August 23, 2007 04:30 PM

I'd be interested in test-knitting and think I'd be a good choice, too, if I do say so myself: I'm probably your "average" potential consumer--not a beginner, but no supergenius knitting prodigy, either. And I already love your designs. : )

Posted by: Jamie at August 23, 2007 04:30 PM

I'm interested.
I consider myself intermediate. I've progressed from afghans/hat/scarves which i've done for a couple of years to socks and knitted garments in the last couple of months. (wooohoo!).

Hi Anna,

I'm interested in supporting you as a test knitter and I'm in London if that helps.

Hope you're keeping well,

I really like my silkscreen apron from maryink on etsy, she has great ss totes:

For smaller projects (think, socks) I am a HUGE fan of the zippered boxbags from http://JapaneseHandmadeEtc.etsy.com as well.

Would you email me your mailing address? I'd love to knit a pair of Saartje's booties but didn't have a baby needing feeties (til now!) :)

Posted by: aija at August 24, 2007 12:51 AM

Goodness! At this stage an offer of help may be too late, but you're more than welcome to get in touch if you need a test knitter at a later date. I've knit both jemima and cherry, so I'm familiar with your patterns. Best of luck to you!

Posted by: Carol at August 24, 2007 01:53 AM

I am interested. Happy to help :-)

Posted by: Jacinta at August 24, 2007 06:32 AM

I could make you some linen totes with one of my prints ... you could borrow them for photo shoots? I don't know how much they would cost ... but I could sell them later on. Is that what you need them for - the photos? It would be fun to be involved. I'm based in London.

Posted by: sarah at August 24, 2007 07:56 AM

Very late in on this one, but nevertheless if you're short a knitter at any point, count me in. I'm in Scotland so there wouldn't be a huge delay in carriage time to get the project to and fro - although with the British postal service, you never quite know, do you? Anyhow, I'm sure you're covered with excellent knitters already but I just wanted to show a bit of support.

Posted by: christine at August 24, 2007 09:07 AM

I'm sure you've got more than enough volunteers, but I'm interested if you need another. :)

Posted by: Phoe at August 24, 2007 09:36 AM

I'd love to test-knit, but I live in South Africa........ probably not convinient.

I make and sell toile de jou totes

Or if you can get a hold of that darn Anya Hindmarch bag, the I"m Not a Plastic Bag bag, that is a fabulous option!

Posted by: Andrea at August 24, 2007 03:42 PM

Remembering how it was when Punk Knits came out, count me in!!! I was the main test knitter for that so I know about those ugly deadlines.

Let me know and GOOD LUCK!!!!!

YES,I'm interested.

I wish I had time (and speed) to help. I will gladly make baby bootees though! Thank you for the poems. I hope you are well, Anna. I sat big exams during my recent pregnancy and know how tough it is to push yourself as hard as you must be doing.

Good luck with all your endeavors, baby, knitting and all else...

I bought my knitting tote from cafe express with a lovely knitting logo on it. Best way to find it is through www.knitty.com and go after knittingshopping on the left menu. It was cheap and will fit all size projects!

I'm so sorry you were badly let-down but I think the response above is enough to make you keep your chin up!
I'd offered to help but I think you could do without my slow knitting skills(unless it's gloves or a hat - something small) and I'm rather over-committed as it is!
Good luck with the book and your loaf, looking forward to seeing both.

I just want to send some good wishes... I always enjoy reading your blog. For an inexpensive knitting tote: what about fabric carry-alls from the grocery? My grocery sells them for on $2US. Not very fashionable... but reasonable and can also be used for grocery shopping.

Posted by: Karen at August 26, 2007 10:30 AM

I'd be interested, even though you already have more than you need. I've knitted one of your patterns and loved it. If you happen to need someone in the future, let me know.

Hi Anna,

yes I am interested too !! I love to knit with your patterns, so I would like to hear from you, Karin

Posted by: Karin at August 27, 2007 10:05 AM

I can see that I am awfully late on this bandwagon but I would be happy to knit. I could happily run you up some simple totes but lack good local fabric sources, if you wanted to choose some fabric and send it I could make them to your size specifications, no payment necessary but a signed book would be heavenly.

Posted by: Rebecca at August 27, 2007 11:56 AM

I would be glad to help you at any time, with any sized project. At this hormonal stage of your life (and all the ones that follow) try to remember that the situation always _feels_ worse than it really is. You have so many supporters who would feel privileged to carry some part of your committments. I am one, knitter for 20 years, prolific and a perfectionist to a middling degree. Please contact me for any test knitting you ever need, starting now.

Posted by: Christine at August 27, 2007 03:15 PM

I'm interested. I have knit quite a few of your patterns and would love to help

Posted by: courtney at August 27, 2007 04:23 PM

Hi! I love reading your blog and I also love your patterns. I have a question concerning the purchase of some of your patterns.

I could not find your email address (maybe I didn't look hard enough) but if you could be kind enough to get back to me so I can ask you a couple questions, that would be lovely!

Thank you very much and keep on knitting, writing and doing whatever you do!

Posted by: Lauren at August 28, 2007 04:15 PM

I know I found this late in the game, but if for any reason you're still looking for test-knitters, I would love to help out. I was a sample knitter for my LYS, until I moved about a year and a half ago -- I miss it terribly. And I admire your work quite a bit.

Late to the party, but I am interested as well. I have test knit before, more inclined to knit sweaters and at fine gauges should you be looking for that.

Sorry to hear that you have been let down. Best wishes.

Posted by: Cathy at August 30, 2007 08:12 PM

Anna,
I see I'm quite late to the party, but I'll let you know regardless that I'd love to do a test knit for you. Your patterns are a delight and just the inspiration for an energized forge back into knitting after 2+ months down and out of commission with Pertussis. And it was a UK doctor's website that convinced my doctor to test me for this! Get re-vaccinated all!

Hello,
I've met you before, I'm a London knitter (used to be based out in Acton so I came to the Ealing S&Bs before I moved). I'd be happy to test knit things for you - have done a bit of it before. I'm happy with most knitting techniques and pretty quick. get in touch if you still need help.

Best wishes,
Kat

Posted by: Kat at August 31, 2007 07:47 AM

I'm interested if you still need a test knitter! I just moved to London last Sunday for a little less than 4 months (study abroad). Are there any yarn stores you recommend? I'm going to try and get to Ally Pally, but I don't know any good knitting stores!
Thanks, and happy knitting!

Posted by: Amanda Barnett at August 31, 2007 11:25 PM

Hi

First off, congratulations on your 'little loaf!'

I'd really like to do some test knitting for you, it's not something I've done before. I would say I'm an intermediate: I try with each project to learn at least one new technique, it's one of my favourite things about knitting.

Not sure what else to say except I'm conscientious and would be willing to give your pattern(s) as much time as they need, oh and yes, I love knitting...

Posted by: Karen at September 2, 2007 11:53 AM

Congrats on the wee one! I'd love to help out test knitting, but it seems I'm a bit late. None the less, if you need another pair of hands, feel free to ask!

Your latest sweater design is lovely. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I love reading your blog and seeing what beautiful and creative designs you come up with!

Posted by: Bernadette at September 4, 2007 12:52 AM

Amelia, although I am far in the list, I, too, am interested. I have been knitting for 50 years ( count them-50!) I consider my self at least experienced in all forms of knitting and an expert in some. If you cannot use me in this instance, perhaps you can use me in the future. Regardless, good luck to you in this endeavor......

Posted by: elizabeth day at September 5, 2007 07:11 PM

I think I said this before, but congrats on your pregnancy! Your Marla photos (with just the wee bit of baby bump) are charming.
