Late for everything, these days
I love the start of a new year. It has a smell about it of new leaves for turning; of fresh notebooks and sharpened pencils. Once upon a time, when my glass was more frequently half empty, I would count my failings at the end of the passing year, rather than look forward to the possibilities ahead.
My tradition these past few years has been to take a walk on New Year's Day, to reflect and consider. I am not generally a prayerful person, but the rhythm of boots on a substantial walk can induce a sort of meditation, where mind and heart open together. At the start of 2008, my life has already changed beyond recognition. This year, I forewent my walk; the opportunity to rest was too attractive to ignore.
The bad news this year is that the publication of my book is delayed. It was inevitable, I suppose. Truly, nothing could have prepared me for how completely time consuming a new baby is - and mine is generally a good, patient boy who is already easing himself into a civilised routine. Yet still my working time has contracted to a mere hour or two each day - once ablutions, sustenance, rest and the general administration required by life have been factored in.
But the good news is that this means I can enjoy these precious first weeks, days which can never be regained. And, remembering that my glass is half full, it will still be published, in good time.
I'm late for everything, these days, but if I have not missed the chance, let me wish you the very best of health and happiness for 2008. You never know, maybe I will even write about some knitting, now and then.

De-lurking just to say that I'll be looking forward to the book, whenever it comes out. I'm sure it will be amazing.
Cute baby, btw.

And I wish you all the best in the new year! I look forward to see your book, and if it's delayed, then it's delayed. It's not the end of anything!

Well spoken. Babies deserve (and require and demand) our undivided attention. My youngest turned three yesterday, and I wish wish wish that she was still tiny enough to fit in the crook of my arm. As for the book, I'll happily purchase it whenever its ready.

Happy New Year, Anna! Lovely post.

Walks are always good to clear the mind in preparation for the new year - which I hope will be a fantastic one for you and your family!

Happy New Year to you and yours too! Congrats on the adorable baby.

i think it's best to think of your book like a good wine... waiting always makes it better!!
happy new year anna!

I'm sure the book postponement must be frustrating, but you're right to focus on the positive- your glass is more than half full! Happy New Year!

Delurking to say CONGRATULATIONS on becoming a Mum; your little boy looks like a real charmer and I'm sure you'll not be late for any of the important things in life.
I loved the entry about you in the KnitKnit book I got for Christmas and look forward to your own book whenever it arrives.

Happy New Year and ablutions? Well if you have time to get the ablutions in then it is definitely glass half-full! I'm not just being cheeky, boy did my personal hygiene suffer during those early baby days. They are the best - discovering each other. You are so right to take time.

Enjoy the youngin' and the New Year!! There is a lot to be said for a more relaxed lifestyle.

I remember those precious days with a baby, lots of cuddleing and not much else seemed to matter. I am looking forward to your book when it does arrive!

A good knitter always has her priorities straight. A book can wait. Enjoy every baby-scented moment!

Happy New Year to the three of you. Anna, don't worry about your book. In publishing, nothing ever gets done according to plan. I used to work in law publishing, and sometimes we commissioned books about changes in the law, only to find that by the time they were written the law had changed again. Much better concentrate on your gorgeous boy. We'll all still be knitting next year and will still be here to buy your book. X

Oh so true... It is so hard to imagine how time might vanish before you have a child. And then suddenly *poof*, it's slipping by you even though you are aware of almost each and every minute.
Enjoy this time. It does pass so fast, and it is irreplacable.

Even with just nephews, I feel I understand far too well the time-crunch babies impose. I feel compelled to do everything for them!
Happy new year and I'm still looking forward to the book!

Happy New Year! Both the book and the baby will grow in due course. Looking forward to seeing both as they develop!

Hello Anna! I have been also consumed for a year now and finally got around to checking blogs! Congratulations on little Stanley - he is beautiful. We wish you all the best, and you are right to cherish every day, because it FLIES. The HEB is 13 months old today.

Oh, I so feel your pain! The hardest thing for me after becoming a mother was feeling at the end of the day like I had accomplished nothing (which you seem to be feeling with the amount of work you're getting done). In a way, David Allen's Getting Things Done was a savior for me - he teaches you to break things down into the next physical step you need to do. I may no longer be able to clean the kitchen in one sitting, but I can clear the table, load the dishwasher, etc. I've taken the same approach to working at home, too. And in bits and pieces, here and there, I manage to actually get a few things done. Hang in there! It does get easier.

Dear Anna - happy new year. Stanley is just so beautiful and I am sure you will all have a wonderful year full of little moments to cherish.

Fresh Notebooks and Sharpened Pencils!
I sure do love that!

I apologize for the randomness of this comment, but couldn't find anywhere else to put it, since the comments seem to be closed on some of your older posts. :( Anyway, I wanted to THANK you for your description of the tubular cast on — I loaned my copy of the book with directions to a friend, and have been googling all over tonight to double-check that I remembered right. Yours is the closest version to my recollection so far! :) One quick note I wanted to make, though, is that I don't think you need to knit quite as many rows as described in your tutorial from late 2005. I tried it tonight, from memory, and started with a knit row in the main color. Doing so enabled me to pick up the other half of the stitches from the waste yarn on the 4th row (2nd purl row) instead of what I think was the 5th row on your directions. Anyway, it's a small time savings, but I just unraveled the crochet chain, and the cast-on edge seems fine, so thought I'd mention this slight variation. :)
PS: As one writer to another, congrats on your book!

I left you a message on Ravelry that you need to see.

hi anna, i probably did not say this earlier but your boy is so sweet! congrats and i wish you have a wonderful year! i can't wait to see your book.

I've nominated you in my list of knitting bloggers who make me smile. Apparently, this means you should "give the award to 10 people whose blogs bring you happiness and inspiration and make you feel happy about blogland. Let them know by posting a comment on their blog so they can pass it on. Beware you may get the award several times." But if you don't do this you won't actually have anything bad happen, so please don't feel pressured: just enjoy the award.

Late wishes for all the best in the new year. And also a comment to let you know you "make my day". I can only echo the comment above: enjoy the award with no blogging strings attached.

I will join the sentiments of others. No blog strings attached but I do enjoy both your knitting and your posts. So I have awarded you a 'You Make My Day' award on my blog too.
I appreciate how busy you must be and I hope that it is going well - I just hope that you are getting to enjoy each and every one of these early days with your little boy, without your book leaning too heavily on you too.

I just wanted to let you know that your blog is among the "ten blogs that make my day" =D
Take care!

I am thrilled to have found you & what you have to offer. Beautiful you, beautiful boy, beautiful knittings... Thank you so much for sharing! Very, very inspiring! I am wondering if the pattern for the gorgeous Birdie pattern is available? I found it in your archives & I see it's noted to be available autumn 2007, but I don't see it in the link for patterns to buy. Thanks so much.
