More my speed

Well! Isn't life time-consuming? My knitting output is so drastically reduced, and my sleep levels are still somewhat depleted (however, as of this week, Stanley has slept through the night (by which I mean 10.30-6.30) three entire times in his whole life, so things are looking up) so when I do have time to photograph, write and post I have been more inclined to nap instead.

But so much less rewarding. And goodness, the child is six months old already and at some point one craves something like normality. I've missed writing here, so I'm going to try harder to do so more regularly, and see how it goes. At this juncture, there's no point having plans set in stone - the best I can do is give it a whirl, and see what happens.

I admit to suffering a little crisis of confidence. Many of the more complex projects I put down at the end of my pregnancy, I feel overwhelmed and even intimidated by. I still find them lovely though, so I'll find a way back to them in time. For now I am trying to carve out opportunities to knit, and enjoying the yarn wrapping around the needle, rediscovering the pleasure in fluency.

rabbit and soaker

Awaiting its lanolin treatment, a wool wrap for a night-nappy (I know you don't need convincing that wool is a wonderful fibre, but it is miraculous in the context of nappies), a cotton rabbit (one of two identical). Rabbit is already looking the worse for wear after just a couple of months' love. Poor soul, he takes quite a battering. When Stanley and I disagree about sleep times, he is held by the arm, leg or ear and flung, fiercely, up and down the cot. When Stan is frustrated and finding sleep difficult, he is crammed into the growling baby's mouth. And even when, as most often happens, sleep comes gently, the little mouth bites and sucks, ten little fingers pinch and prod, arranging and rearranging him endlessly across the boy's face, until sleep comes for Stan - and rest comes for rabbit.

PS: Thank you all so much for your messages. You are so kind and wise and exactly the sort of people I am pleased and proud to know.

"Isn't life time-consuming?"

Yes, it certainly is! How nicely phrased. Cute bunny!

I'm sure you already know - normality changes. Probably gets even better.

How nice to see handknits well-used and well-loved! Stanley is an appreciative recipient.

Thank you for the lovely post and the beautiful images of bunny's life with Stanley.

It does get easier - less physically exhausting, at least. My 3-year old has slept through the night only 4 times so far - and yet despite that fact I'm FINALLY well-rested, get upwards of 8 hours of sleep a night, etc. NOW. FINALLY. I just have to make sure that there's a wee bit of extra room available in the parental bed for him & up he climbs - doesn't even wake me up half of the time!

I'd love to see a picture of Stanley - hard to believe that he's already 6 months old - it seems like just a few posts ago that you were announcing that you were expecting!!!!!

It's nice to have you back here. Your description of Stan's sleep-time routines vis a vis the rabbit is wonderful. I'm listening to a completely boring audiobook right now with similar themes and, though I know it's the writing that's dull, I was wondering if it's just boring to write about a woman's life as she marries, has kids, etc--no. It's not, if you write about it. So may I suggest your next book deal be for prose?

And I know just what you mean on those crises of confidence: things can look so complicated and unapproachable! This is why I only fake-quilt, so far at least, and avoid intense sewing tutorials online. I will go find them when I need them; before then they are completely overwhelming.

Happy 6 months to Stanley! I have been keeping up with your news, but I have not written after every post. I hope your decision to withdraw from the book is not weighing upon you. There will be other books. I am sure of it. As part of your "public" I will follow your activities and knit your patterns in whatever form in which they are available.

oh I wouldnt worry about compex stuff....you have baby, they make you tired!! Any woman who says she isnt tired or doesnt have the same concentration when they have a lil one is totally fibbing! ;)

I made that exact same rabbit for my youngest...he sadly was loved to death in the end poor rabbit, but its lovely to know they like the toy so much isnt it.

Any posts however irregular are always welcome from you. Is Stanley really six months old already?
I think things always look more intimidating when you tired and extremely busy (definition of a new mother there). Enjoy the stocking stitch months and this new phase of you, the challenging knitting will be there when you are ready for it.

Very evocative.

So happy to hear from you, at whatever intervals. Your priorities are good.

Hi Anna - congratulations on Stanley sleeping so well. It took my little guy well over 2 years to get the hang of that!
I was sorry to read your last post, but I think you're doing the right thing putting your family life first. The rest of us will just have to wait a little bit longer to see your lovely designs.
Continue enjoying your boy - they grow up so fast!

Motherhood is a shock to the order of things - no one prepares you for it and it takes time to re-adjust. Knit what makes you happy - sleep when you need to. Gradually as you are seeing a new order will come in to your life. Stanley sounds just perfect and so much fun. I loved watching their little personalities unfold - even at 3AM!

Thanks for this insight into the life of a knit bunny. I'm planning a knit elephant for a friend of mine's soon-to-be child, and have admired lots of cashmerino versions on ravelry, thinking about how warm and cuddly they must be... without realising that chewing is probably a more likely fate for my little elephant. Cotton it is!

Wow - I made that exact rabbit (Rowan, yes?) years ago as one of my very first knitting projects. I feel rather absurdly pleased that Stanley is getting so much joy and comfort from your version.

Ohhhh, the story of Stanley and his rabbit is breaking my heart (in a good way!)

Is there a suitable freebie pattern for woollen nappy wraps, then? I would love to know about it if so... :D

Posted by: Kitty Jimjams at May 25, 2008 04:20 PM

I never used wool nappy thingies for mine as I wasn't such a knitter then but I wish I had! Little rabbit looks cute.

Posted by: Lin at May 26, 2008 06:48 AM

lovely to pop back and find several posts from you up here. I would really like to make some of those woollen nappies for pals using reusable nappies, you have inspired me. Sounds like the book deal has been really weighing on you and I hope that you continue to feel better now you don't have to worry about it. Life's too short isn't it. Wishing you all the perfect summer. Hx

Go at your own pace, Anna. Do what makes you feel good. Things will fall into place as they are meant to. :)

I'm new here -- just found your blog through KnitKnit (the book). What wise and kind Commenters you have! Yep, it's not a *bad* thing that this *is* the time for some things and *not* for others; just different.

Dear Anna
I feel reluctant to try imposing anything more on you..... but, I love the idea of woolen nappy wraps (my little one is still cloth nappied). I had not come across them before. Is the pattern your own?

I love the description of Stanley and his rabbit. So very evocative. ~x~

Hello Anna

Am terribly sorry to hear about your book, but it will all work out in the end. You already have a name due to the knit knit book and your patterns presence on ravelry.

I'm so happy that you're bonding with your son, despite all the challenges that being a new mother represents.

Am looking forward to see what you have in store for us. Also, good to have you back on the blog.
